The View - Lugano
I'm taking the family (2 adults and 2 kids) to Switzerland at the end of February and we were thinking of spending 2 days in Lugano. I've got a bunch of Hyatt points and originally thought that we'd use them at The View before looking up the price. Now seeing that it's 40k points (way higher than any other Hyatt in the world), I'm having second thoughts. Has anyone stayed there? Is it really that good? Would you recommend paying cash somewhere else and saving the points? Would you recommend skipping Lugano altogether?
Thanks for the advice. |
I don't know the hotel but I looked at its location and its way up a very steep hill, so unless you're planning on taking taxis (big CHFs, but then you're looking at a 500CHF/night hotel) everywhere I wouldn't stay there with kids.
Pick somewhere on the lakefront and closer to the center of town. As for skipping Lugano altogether, it really depends on your itinerary and what you're looking for. EDIT: I see you're looking at the end of February: the only view you might get from that hotel is thick fog over the lake. |
I was in Lugano last weekend. I enjoyed my time there more than I expected to, it's a very pleasant city with lovely views by the lake and some very good restaurants. I stayed at this hotel which was well located and very comfortable:

I stayed there for five nights over New Year's, the first night using Hyatt points and utilising my Citi Fourth Night Free on the other four nights. It's a very nice hotel, the views are spectacular, and the rooms are large, but it is in my mind more suitable for couples than families. The room is completely open plan and there are little pain points like sensor lights in the bathroom and wooden floors that can get slippery, which might cause difficulties with kids. (Having said that, there were a couple of families with kids there during our stay, and the floor plan does show that there are interconnecting rooms, so kids are certainly welcome.)
The hill location is a wash - the hotel provides free use of electric smart cars during your stay which are very handy for zipping into town in. Reflecting on it - we enjoyed our stay there, but I think I would have baulked at paying the full cash rate for five nights. The 4th night free and earning back 60% of our first night's Hyatt stay in points took the sting out of it for us. |
Take a look at Villa Sassa for family suitable rooms. Lovely place, great views, 20 minute walk to the Casino, friendly staff.
Also, conditions permitting, check out the funicular to Monte San Salvatore, if you haven't been before. |

Thanks for the advice. My wife really wanted to stay there, and I've got more hyatt points than I know what to do with, so I went ahead and booked it for 2 nights. I'll provide more feedback upon my return.

Does The View provides one category upgrade as stipulated by WoH? The base room is Junior Suite and one category upgrade will be to full Suite.
BTW, perhaps this thread should be in WoH forum? |
