I think the reference was to metro line 1 (the "underground" if you translate the Hungarian literally) rather than to the bog-standard metro line 3 which runs to Kőbánya-Kispest.
Perhaps they’ve upgraded that line in the meantime. |

For anyone thinking of taking this way to/from the airport (which is generally perfectly do-able if you avoid rush hours), the metro line 3 is closed at weekends, until a date to be determined, for engineering work. This means getting a replacement bus along the whole length of the line, which I wouldn't particularly recommend.

All I can say is that when we arrived in Budapest last September, the line 3 train we rode to Nyugati Pályaudvar was very much vintage rolling stock. Looked like 1950s-era cars to my concededly non-expert eye.
Perhaps they’ve upgraded that line in the meantime. |

Cab to downtown Pest - ca 8000HUF ($30) About 30-35 minutes, have done in 25 in late evening or early morning. Don't go with hustlers in the arrival hall, just use the official one (Főtaxi) outside with a booth. The cabs are metered.
Bus 100E - 900 HUF ($3) About 45 minutes. Walking distance to Kempinski, Ritz Carlton, a bit longer walk, still easy to the Marriott, IC or Sofitel. (etc) Bus 200 + subway blue line (Metro) - 2x350 HUF ( (2x$1,2) or free with a day-pass. About 1 hr, good if you need to go places along the blue line |

...another option is transferring from the 200E bus to rail at Ferihegy. The trains are less frequent, but also faster than the Metro and not interrupted by the current construction, so it may average out.

I just tested the 100 bus - very good alternative to the taxi if your destination is near its three stops (Kalvin, Astoria or Deák) Taxi is not faster and 10x more expensive. The 200E + metro combo would take the daily ticket, but very much slower than the 100E

Anyone recently used shuttle Budapest minibus from airport to city?. Says 22e flat rate for 1-4 people (we are 2). No sharing, private vehicle. Our destination is Novotel Centrum hotel (they recommended shuttle). I like that we don't have to pay until destination so if it doesn't work out we can cancel and take taxi from airport. What do you think??? Thanks in advance.
