Slovenia??
Looking for a economical but as direct as possible way to get to Slovenia this fall. I have heard GREAT things about the country and would like to explore it with my wife.
Looking for good deals on airfare at the moment, open to stopping over in one city at most. I have seen that the most common way of getting there is to go via Venice and then head to Slovenia which is really close. Anyone have any experience or tips? Thanks in advance!^ |

shmalworth, welcome to Flyertalk. While none of us can help with airfares we can probably offer some general advice... but we need to know where you are travelling from. This is an international forum with members in most countries in the world.

If you are travelling from the US, you're probably best looking for the cheapest flight you can get to a reasonably major European gateway, then transferring to an LCC if a reasonably priced connection is unavailable. Check Skyscanner.net to see availability on that leg. Alternatively, Ljubljana is very accessible by train - it's a very pleasant journey down from Vienna, or Munich via Salzburg, for example. And Koper (Capodistria) or Piran (Pirano) are easily reached from Trieste, or indeed by ferry from Venice. |

OP welcome to FT Isnt LJU JPs (Adrias) hub? if it is then its a part of *A so although from the US there wont be any non-stops it should be easy to find cheap fares (OK if looking to go now or Aug (most ElCheapos are most likely spoken for) but a $1k tkt should be doable and of cause award tkts as well just one needs to be flex. Unless the LCCs fare are really dirt cheap, Id skip them if one wants to do a same day connect, as many flights are delayed leaving the US and if you miss that LCC flight you will have to spring for another tkt, however if a person buys say a UA/JP combo then if UA is delayed the person will have protection. But I agree with the LCC if a combo from say the US will cost alot more or if a person will say do a nightover before connecting to the LCC or leaves a very large layover time , but buyer beware as not all LCCs will fly out of the same airport as you arrive into, added stress, so one must make sure that they dotted all the Is and crossed all the Ts before buying anything That said is a VIE-LJU via bus or train doable as a day trip? |
Oh, agree, I was just going on the implication that the OP was struggling to find reasonable through fares. If you can get there on a 'proper' connection at a half-decent price, do it!
Vienna-Ljubljana is a 6h journey, but a pleasant one. There are certainly day trains that cover it. Graz is on the way, though, and an interesting stopoff. |

Oh no, no good for a day trip.
What about Moravia? Brno's only an hour and a half from Vienna. |

We did a tour of Slovenia and Croatia in 2014. We flew into Venice and visited there for several days before heading to Ljubljana. I too researched the bus/train option from Vienna or Salzburg but decided it added unnecessary time and effort so Venice worked out well. We used a Shared Van service from Venice to Ljubljana...6-8 passengers and took 2 to 2 ½ hrs to Ljubljana.....very easy and cost effective. We used GoOpti.
Ljubljana is a lovely walkable city and we found Slovenians to be very friendly, outgoing and curious . Highly recommend! On Fridays in the summer they have a Food Fest in the square. |
Salzburg is easy - 2h30, and you've the choice of OEBB and WestBahn. Nice trains, too.
