What does a sketch by an Austrian comedian have to do with Turkey becoming a member of the EU? Und überhaupt (you do speak German), what do these "statements" have to do with a transit visa? |
Can you still get buy 90 days visa for $20 when you arrive at IST?

Hello Board,
Question from newbie re need for Turkish transit visa. I have done extensive research and still can't find definitive answer. I am a US citizen and will be flying from Budapest, Hungary to Seoul, South Korea. My flight itinerary is as follows: Budapest- Istanbul (on Turkish Airlines), then 3 hour connection/transit time in Istanbul Airport (Ataturk), then continuation Istanbul (Ataturk) to Seoul (on Asiana Airlines). DO I NEED A TURKISH VISA OR NOT?? According to Turkish Dept of Foreign Affairs, I would not need a visa as long as I will be within "transit zone" (whatever it means). According to local consulate (in NYC) I do need visa... Please help- many thanks in advance! |

That's not to say your change of planes may not require a passage through the different immigration zones...but it's better to be on the safe side and get the evisa. |

Not any more. The visa on arrival is being phased out. That said - my brother transited through IST from US to an EU bound flight & he didn't need any visa.

This answer is clearly NOT helpful: You definitely, certainly, absolutely need no visa of any kind when transiting unless your connecting flight is towards another Turkish city! This is as "safe" as can be, regardless of the whether your final destination is EU (or non-EU Europe), Asia, America(s) or Oceania!
Here it is from the airport's website, http://www.ataturkairport.com/en-EN/.../Transfer.aspx Transfer Passengers: (International Transfer Passengers With A Domestic Connection Flight) Passengers arriving from abroad are subject to visa and passport controls to enter the country at the Arrivals Floor before they proceed for their domestic connection flight. ... (International Transfer Passengers With An International Connection Flight) A boarding card is issued for the passenger (if not issued in the country of origin) at the transit desk of the relevant handling company on the Arrivals floor. The passenger does not go through passport control. Instead, he/she directly proceeds through the transit area into the International Departures area. Baggage will be automatically transferred to the connecting flight. No passport control = no visa required. However, if someone wishes to make a $20 financial contribution by getting a visa they don't need, I guess that's a personal choice. |
Just to be clear, no transit visa is required if not leaving the airport. If leaving the airport, the $20 you used to pay for a visa is now replaced by an e-visa you should do in advance of your travel.

Checking to see if this is still true. Flying SFO-IST-ATH with a 2 hour connection in IST, I assume I do not need visa as I am not going through immigration to enter Turkey?

Assuming that you're a US citizen, you wouldn't need a visa nor an e-visa for that transfer as you would remain at the international transit zone during your entire layover.
