Not having a return ticket to your country of origin could be iffy too.

This happened to some students in Dublin, Ireland a few years ago, and Ireland being what it is, the government issued an apology and several hotels and other businesses offered them complimentary services when they returned.

I'm from the US, and whenever I've flown to Europe, I've never been asked for an onward ticket/proof of funds. The only downside was wishing I could prove to myself that I had the funds to go to Europe...

I've had more issues (to/fro anywhere) departing, that's why I have a random flight number/date/plan written somewhere to show to the check-in agent if it gets to that point. Heck if you're really worried, buy a refundable OW ticket (just before boarding).

Though, I still wonder why Ireland only gave me seven days in 2007, as opposed to the ninety or thereabouts that people from the states usually get.

I know a few Kiwis that were not allowed in at Stansted when they didn't have a return flight or hotel reservations. But the border agents in the UK are not picked from the friendly tree.

Happened to people I know, too. Traditionally welcoming Ireland went through a phase, 'round about then, where they asked how long you intended to stay and added a day or two more to the permission. It was rumoured to be in retaliation for some slight perpetrated by the US. All has been back to normal for a good while now.

cheers,

Henry

Thanks for all of the (very quick) responses. I appreciate it!

Don't count on it, but certain Schengen border guards (usually Romance-speaking) will sometimes wave US passport holders through without even looking.

That can cause issues if departing Schengen from somewhere more officious such as Germany.

Interestingly the only place in the world I (British citizen) have ever been asked for proof of onward flight is NZ. At the time I was in my mid-30s, reasonably well presented and Mrs Schmidt and I had arrived on SQ in business class. If I think back to the days when I arrived in all sorts of places around the world dressed like a tramp with barely a penny in my pocket..... The NZ immigration guy was one of the most pleasant I have ever encountered and was almost apologetic in asking. I think I told him something along the lines of how I thought NZ was nice, but not that nice......

Last year I was travelling with a UK passport on three one-way award tickets in F and C booked separately for UK-Japan//Japan-US//US-UK. When checking in at MAN I was asked for an onward ticket out of Japan by airline staff. I wasn't asked for my onward ticket when leaving NRT or arriving in ORD.

happens all the time. they dont want to bear the responsibility that you get deported cuz you dont have onward flights.

I travel with a cannuck passport but i am a HKG PR. always get looks when i'm not travelling with CX (say JL from japan or NZ from LHR back then) that wants to prove I can stay in HKG.
