How to go running through Brussels on a BRU layover

If you have a 3 hour layover or longer at Brussels International Airport, get out of the airport and go for a run in downtown Brussels. Its a small, compact city and the public transport is quick and easy.

Here's how to run Belgium's main airport & capital city in 7 easy steps:

1. Plan ahead. Know how far and how fast you run and used Gmap Pedometer to map out your run.

I like to run a 6-7 mile loop from Gare de Bruxelles-Nord around the city center. Here are a few examples:

You can also run from Gare de Bruxelles-Midi or direct from the airport - there's a clearly marked bike path to follow.

2. Change and store your luggage. Pack your running gear in your carry on, change in the Level 1 bathrooms, and lockers are on level 0. They require a 1 Euro deposit, and its 7.50 Euros for any time longer than 30 minutes.

3. Take the train downtown to either Nord or Midi. Airport trains leave every 20-30 minutes on the weekend (when I fly through) and are 13 Euro if you buy a round trip in advance.

4. Run! Enjoy the city scenery as you do.

5. Take the train back to the airport & get your luggage.

6. Shower in the airport lounges. Note you may need to shower in T even if you are flying out in B

7. Continue your trip. What better way to fly onward and really enjoy the inflight drinks and nibbles, than with a post-run high?

Now go forth and enjoy!
