I spent a week in Norway last month--Oslo, fjords (Flam), and Bergen. It was nice, but I don't recommend it for a first-timer (essentially) to Europe. As mentioned previously it is expensive: a glass of house wine in middle-range bar/grill type place was $15; a 20oz (or so) Cola Light (Diet Coke) at Oslo train station was $5 from one of the convenience stands (would be like $2 at New York Penn Station). It was also chilly-I wore some kind of jacket every day in mid-August, with several days of rain. As true in Scandinavia generally, English is widely-spoken.
In June, I would recommend someplace further south, like Germany. My new favorite is Berlin. But still I have to say the obvious--everyone simply must visit Paris. Of course, there will be hordes of tourists in Paris in June. Berlin, though popular, would likely be less tourist-infested. Switzerland is nice, but must be really expensive now, with the recent rise of the Swiss Franc -- maybe it is competiitive with Norway! |

2 weeks will go quickly. I would consider an open jaw flight where I hit one area, buy a one way ticket on a low cost carrier to fly to another area, and then return from there. An example:
- Fly to Vienna - Stay 3ish days, then train to Prague for another 3 days - Fly to Brussels for a day or 2, hit Brugges then down to Paris for another 3-4 days - Drag yourself back. Another area worth considering is Italy, which hasn't yet been mentioned. I'm envious already! Consider travelling by train in Europe, it is very scenic and the train services are usually very good! Vienna is great, one of my favourite Europen cities. 3 or 4 days would do. If you like mountains, consider a train ride to Innsbruck (will take most of a day, but very scenic) and take some walks in the mountains around the town. Fom Innsbruck to Paris (by train again, dont know about the connections). Paris to Brussels (short and very quick train ride). Not much in the way of beaches, for that you should go further South (Southern France, Italy or Spain). But otherwise, you'd have it covered. |
they are in early 20s: cost is a consideration!
I really enjoyed my week in Bulgaria this summer. The food was really good, and both mountains (Bulgaria was trying to get the Winter Olympics) and beaches (Black Sea coast, where much of Eastern Europe spends the summer) are available. Bulgaria is the only place discussed on this thread that is cheaper than Savannah, GA (OP's place of reference); all these other places are much more costly.
For variety, OP could also visit Turkey, which is right next door. |
