Hotels in Amsterdam? Tips?

I'll be in Amsterdam for three nights later this summer on a "stopover"/return to US. Looking for "reasonably" priced, comfortable, convenient hotel, located in/near city center, "tourist attractions". My loyalty tends to be w/Hilton family of properties, but Marriott, Sheraton and others do get my business as well. Any suggestions or tips will be appreciated. Also, inexpensive, efficient transportation for two from airport to hotel?

I believe this belongs in the Travel section of FT since it's not Hilton specific.

Sorry, rookie error! I am most interested in Hilton in this inquiry (and so it began that way), but I suppose I got carried away with other questions that popped into mind. I've spent hours on the FT site in a fairly short period of time searching and researching, but I do have a lot to learn...just about the use of FT...never mind my travel ignorance and related questions! I appreciate all the guidance from the veterans!

There is only one Hilton in the Amsterdam city center, a lot of information you can find in this thread:

The Hague

I know you're planning to be Amsterdam. But The Hague is only 30+ min from Amsterdam by train. Hilton The Hague is a great new hotel that is reasonable priced (low on weekends) and very nice Executive Lounge. You can always consider spending the last night at The Hague.

We're only there for a short time (3 nights)... but I did consider that!

I'll input my two cents' worth. If you only have 3 days, I would stay in Amsterdam and MAYBE take a side trip to The Hague. There is simply too much to do in Amsterdam.

the Hilton in AMS is excellent; there is also a Renaissance and a Crowne Plaza (I know they're Marriott and IHG, respectively, but if you're looking for downtown, that may be an option, since they're both only a couple of blocks from Centraal Station), the Pulitzer (I think it is a Sheraton), and some Best Westerns, etc. There are also some properties near the airport, but that's also about 20 minutes to downtown by train.

There is a wonderful Marriott close to the Reijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum. Stayed there last September and was very happy.

Hilton AMS is good, but EXPENSIVE!!!
