Side trip recommendations from Prague
 

I'm visiting Prague in mid May, and have 8 days total to work with. As I don't think Prague will really require so much time, I'm thinking of a side trip, either via rail or air.

I'm looking for recommendations; I've hit most if not all of the top cities (Vienna and Budapest in particular) so tertiary places interest me. Never been to Milan, so that's on the list. Venice, been there, but in 1978, so a refresher may be in order. Krakow perhaps? Dresden? (Been to Berlin as well).

Italy is far...I guess you'd fly there?

You could easily spend 8 days in Prague and take a couple day trips and be totally happy (depending on your travel tastes).

If you want to stick to cities, yes, Dresden is great, and Krakow is great.

While I could spend an unlimited amount of time in Prague, I'll try to help a bit...
Around CZ: Česky Krumlov, Plseň and Dresden are all good day trips, although I'd say that Dresden is worth 2 days/1 night and Česky Krumlov is worth an overnight as well.

Dresden and Plseň are easy to get to by train, the last one is probably best by bus.

I like Plzen, but there are so many more attractive and interesting Czech cities and towns, IMO. The only real unique thing is the brewery.

We spent a week in Praha. Our only regret, in hindsight, was not visiting CK.

Not that it's a side trip, but it's something to do.

Dresden is a lot easier to get to and well worth a day or two, but I find Krakow to be more attractive.

Well, one was firebombed and one wasn't. ;)

I suspect this has more than a little bit to do with it, although the difference between the Dresden I first laid eyes on in 1990 and the Dresden of today is nothing short of shocking.

Krakow is quite fascinating:) Many historical places, additionally food is delicious! You must eat zapiekanka and sausages! Many clabs, fantastic restaurants....

How about Brno?

Brno is nice, but cannot hold a candle to Dresden or Krakow IMO.
