We visited both Orava and Spis Castles and they were both excellent...

FYI, The castle scenes from the movie Dragonheart (Sean Connery & Dennis Quaid) were filmed at Spiš castle.

My German served us well in many places, but enough people spoke English that we would have survived.

As a general rule, the younger Slovaks are more likely to speak English and the older German.

My wife particularly enjoyed trying many different versions of halusky. She makes a dish at home we call halusky with just noodles and cabbage. Since she is vegetarian, I doubt she'll change her recipe, but she happily ordered it and picked out the bacon all over the country.

I love halušky. It is one of the Slovak national dishes. Somewhat similar to gnocchi. Btw a great place for halušky is at a restaurant on the highway that passes Spiš Castle.

Levoca - Oaza - a tremendous bargain and quite nice

Have been to the medieval walled town of Levoča several times, the first time as a tweenager in 1971 for the 750 year anniversary of it's founding. The Cage of Shame is interesting in the town square.

I have made several trips and snow skied in Slovakia as it my ancestral home. If anyone would like more info, particularly of northern Slovakia region of Spiš, Tatra mountains or even across into southern Poland feel free to PM me.
