Piraeus -> Athens
Is the Metro easy and convenient to get from the Ferry/Port in Piraeus to Athens?
|
Yep. Stops across the street.
The post area is huge. Your ferry may not be docked/arrive near the train terminal, and you will have to take one of the free port buses to get there. |
If you are coming in with a regular ferry, it's usually a few blocks (like 5-10 minutes) walking distance. Look for the big white pedestrian bridge over the street next to the port area, that's where the metro station is.
Cruise ships often dock in the more remote parts of the basin, so in that case a port bus might be the best option. |
Thank folks. We'll be arriving on an ANEK ferry from Crete.
|
The Anek ferries from Crete should dock on area E2 on this map. I would look for the bus unless you feel up to a fairly long walk and have light luggage. I still recall jogging in flip-flops from E9 to E2 (was given wrong directions) with luggage in the 90's and watching the boat sail away :(
Avoid Piraeus taxis at all costs, those loitering there are the worst in Athens, along with the ones in Syntagma. |

Not sure I agree about the taxis. The port now has an organised taxi rank-had no issues at all last year the two times we were there with a group of us. A big board indicates average prices to major destinations. But I would avoid taxis due to the traffic getting out of the port area. Metro or suburban rail are the best options ( and the latter is not terribly frequent whilst the pireus - SKA line is being updated). |
We had no problems getting off of the ANEK ship and hopping on the bus to the Metro.
Thanks for that tip. |
