what would work as a "mattress"?

If I had known, I would have walked off with a J "mattress" on my last flight before they stopped giving them out.

Short of making one myself, is there something that I could buy and carry that would fill that role? They sell seat covers for economy seats but they're too short for lie-flat seats.

Yes, I know, I should fly QR instead...

When I flew Etihad J I don't think I was ever offered a mattress but perhaps that was like with the PJs a 7 hour night flight was not considered a night flight

You can get a super lightweight inflatable hiking sleeping pad. They fold up very small and inflate with a few puffs..

Just don't inflate it until you're at cruising altitude...
