Advice from Frequent flyers - to wait for upgrade at boarding or bid for an upgrade

Doing the Etihad Syd-Auh run - I am Etihad Silver

Auh-Syd, 6/10 times I have been upgraded to business - however can't say the same for Syd-Auh

Can someone who has flown with Eithad extensively tell me if I should try there Bid for Upgrade option - I have never tried it before - If I make the lowest bid what are my chances ? Currently lowest bid for the leg is $1600 to upgrade from Economy to Business.

Or should I risk it and hope to get upgraded based purely on my status.

Flight deets - EY455 30/08 Syd-Auh

I have flown extensively and virtually never received an op-up (4 times out of 153 segments, to be precise) despite always being either Gold or Platinum. Others posting here, like you, seem to be doing fine. In my case, I'd do the bid because I can virtually guarantee that I won't be op-upped. For your case, it seems like you have a > 50% chance of being upgraded, so I wouldn't bother bidding.

Since I got Platinum I have been upgraded once. Due to weather issues and cancelled flights before. Other than that never.
If I want business I need to bid. seems to be only way for me as well.

When I was gold and silver I got upgrade around 40% of my flights.

So agree with previous poster, dont bother if you get around 60% upgrade.
You can always ask when you sitting on the plane for paid upgrade.
