Does web check-in deprieves you from possible Op-ups?
I think so. That is, doing web-check-in may cause a chance to get the last minutes op-ups in a full/overbooked flight.
Especially, if you have already chosen a seat and pre-ordered a special meal. I experienced this recently. I did checked-in to my flight 5 hrs before departure. During the baggage drop, I found that flight was overbooked. A colleagure of mine who is Silver, who had not web-checked-in got bumped to J along with few others, whereas I had to endure Y :( Do you guys agree? What good web-check-in is for? |

I don't think so.
I have always checked in online since it has been possible and the percentage of op-ups has been the same as it was before - 20-25%. In 2008 I had 3 op-ups out of 12 sectors and all were done at the gate, never at check in. In 2009 I have only flown 2 sectors in Y (the rest have been in J), and both were half empty flights, so no chance for op-up. |

What EK Status are you? If you have blue or no status, then the reason for him receiving the Op-Up could have been due to his status and NOT due to not checking ni on line. |

We were discussing this in the forum: Some checked-in online and found they were upgraded already online, thus, able to choose a seat in F or C
What I would never do is to prebook a special meal, albeit I have been op-uped nevertheless 2-3x this year with special meal in Y. |

Nope!!! ... Checked in online 20 hours before departure. Got an op-up at the gate. Although, you may have a point. My printer ate my boarding pass. Went to the airport about two hours before departure, told the lady that "my printer ate my boarding pass", she gave me the "You, sure it was not your dog" look, smiled and gave me another one. Was issued a new one at the gate... when the machine went Beep Beep Beep I thought EK was gonna punish me for piling extra bacon strips on my plate in the lounge. Luckily enjoying bacon ( even if its fake turkey bacon ) is fine with EK... it was an op-up. On another note, managed to corner a FA during the flight and put the million dollar question to it... How does EK decide who gets an op-up? Eight Ball? Apparently its the same way every other airline makes the decision... its automatic. a) Status b) Sub-Status --- a combo of status + class flown histrionically i.e. miles BTW this person showed me ( After repeatedly asking the same questions, this person did not give out any information voluntarily... it was that or the person would have had to sucker punch me and put me in handcuffs, guess I managed to annoy the person till they just got fed up and answered ) what kind of info they have on us, midflight... apparently until a while back they could see past and future trips. but at the moment they can see both tier miles and skywards miles. Any comments put in to the profile by other crews ( hopefully positive comments ) , and the regular profile ... seat preference, drink preference , newspaper blah blah. Although it would be great if they could see the past and future trips too... but I guess it was stopped after some FA did the following PAX: Good morning PAX-WIFE: Good morning FA: Welcome Back, this is your seat... how was your last trip to Las Vegas PAX: Oh CRAP PAX-WIFE: Say What? FA: Ooops! PAX-WIFE: You .......! You said you went to LA on a business trip PAX: Oh CRAP PAX-WIFE: <grabs the bottle of dom and breaks it on her husbands head> rest of the story can be read on cnn.com , how an enraged wife beat the crap out of a cheating husband |
