Ever not manager to upgrade with miles?

I have read the posts and feel fairly confident about upgrading with miles. I would like to do it all online to save/make miles but I am worried about buying an economy flight and not being able to upgrade due to ticket type or J availability.

Has anyone not been able to upgrade sectors they wanted to?

Does booking the ticket and the upgrade with skywards make the process more likely?

Any experience of this would be welcome

Every ticket type (booking class) is good for an upgrade.

If you book online, you get information if economy, business or first class is available. If business class is available, you can upgrade from economy.

Skywards is one of the best (if not the best) frequent flyer programs for upgrading with miles!

If you let me know the flights and dates, I can check upgrade availability on ExpertFlyer.

As dusordua said, it's not usually a problem.

Cheers,
Rick

Thanks Rick. Can I take you up on that in a few weeks time by PM? It would be great to know with more certainty before I booked.

Thanks for your posts by the way. Always informative.

You can also call Skywards to check the J availability prior to booking/paying for the Y tickets :)

This is true Emirates are the best program for upgrading with miles. Tried upgrading my son Man - DBX with KLM and using miles it was impossible. Buying the cheapest ticket he could with Emirates i upgraded him on line with no bother. And you get all the other benefits such as chauffeur drive etc.

I'd make sure you call Skywards first... I thought you could only upgrade from Economy to Business if there were seats available in C class, not J class. Checking on the website to see if seats are available in Business is not sufficient as it will show J & C availability - you need to use the KVS Tool (or similar) to see if C class is available.

I would advise calling the Skywards Service Centre about this - I've needed to change flights on an Economy to Business upgrade before and they've held a C class seat for me whilst the cancel/rebook process was happening.

2 people each with thier own skyward accounts on one booking , how do they upgrade using miles from thier own skyward accounts? Tried to do this online but all miles had to be taken from one account

I've had issues with upgrades but only when the dates were not flexible (on only one occasion).. and was during a very in demand season (certain weeks in may, etc)

However if there is some flexibility.. I've found that emirates is by far the easiest airline to get upgrades with.. call skywards for more info.. you may need to call back a couple times to get accurate info...as some at the call center are unwilling to share all information necessary.

usually they will tell you if there are 1-4 seats available.. or 9+ i usually book early and shoot for 9+ so i can get as close to the front as possible and window seats.

if you want to do everything online.. just call before hand and get some info from the skywards rep.

Yes, I did this yesterday for myself and my husband. Tried to upgrade online, but that was only possible if all the points were coming from one account, however, phoned Skywards and it was no problem.

Sorry this is an old post, but I just booked BOM-SFO-BOM with EK via DXB, and had the booking already up with the flights I had selected, called skywards, asked them if I would be able to upgrade by giving them the selected dates and flight numbers.

They said it was OK, I made the booking and immediatley upgraded as soon as a PNR was allocated, I did the whole thing very easily.

I agree, EK are the easiest to upgrade with AND you get FULL benefits
