UAE3801 / EK3801 A380 Landing at JFK 8/1/08 I'd hoped to see it from my window in Manhattan while listening to the ATC feed, but alas, the visibility wasn't quite good enough! |
Found a video from EK is introduces of A380 into JFK:

Emirates A380 First Flight DXB-JFK
|
The more EK J I see, the more SQ J I want to fly. I'm not really a fan of the EK A380 J. It looks a little tacky (cheap?) to me and not really up to the same standard other airlines are coming out with. Will have to see for myself next year I guess...

EK3801 Trip Report
I flew EK3801 in F; also flew SQ380 in J. Nothing special was done at the airport in advance of the flight - disappointing after the big "show" from SQ. All passengers got a bag with a certificate (fill in your own name), color brochure, and an A380 model aircraft in a nice box. Likewise the check-in area at DXB didn't have anything special to announce the first flight - it didn't feel like it was very much of a big deal at the airpot (though having been in Dubai for the few weeks leading up to the flight there was a lot of news/newspaper coverage).
Aircraft is very nice; F suites are on the upper deck on EK planes; narrow fuselage means suites are much smaller than those on SQ where F is on the lower deck. In SQ suite, you can stand with suite door closed (albeit not a huge amount of room) though EK suite door runs right next to the seat. Suites appear to be exactly the same as those on 777-300ER. By any standard outside of SQ, a beautiful suite/seat but SQ is, IMHO, in a different class (just like they advertise) and the bed in the SQ seat is far, far better than the seat that converts to a bed in the EK suite. I do light the "lamp" on the desk/table of the EK suite - it's a nice touch and an elegant piece of design. This flight had far fewer press onboard than SQ380 which made for a calmer environment; it was busy though not the "party" of SQ380 - it did, however, make the flight feel a bit less "special". Other trip reports have far better photos than I'm able to take. The F bathrooms with shower are amazing and the photos don't even do them justice - huge, kept spotlessly clean by 2 dedicated attendants that cleaned after each passenger use - and the shower is a regular shower with nice water pressure (this is a good thing; I'd read reports in advance that talked about a special shower/mister contraption, etc. and it was nice to see a regular shower with great pressure and plenty of hot water! Countdown timer keeps track of your 5 minutes which was more than enough. When both F spa shower toilets were occupied, F class passengers also have access to the toilet at the back of the F cabin in the galley (with a window!) also shared by C class. Dining/menu was pretty much the same as regular EK long-haul F. Dine on demand is nice though you sometime feel "abandoned" by the cabin staff as they don't come by unless called. No drink refills, regular queries if you need anything, etc. I guess it's a matter of personal preference but I do like when cabin staff "take care of you" during a flight. All the cabin staff was very nice but would have to say the service was "OK" at best. I was in row 4 (last row) of F class and took 77 minutes until after takeoff for the first person (purser) to come by my seat and take a drink order, welcome me aboard. Menu followed 15 minutes later and, only after several queries by a few of us, did amenity kits/slippers, etc. show up - 2+ hours into the flight (though they are far nicer than those on SQ so it was ultimately worth the wait <grin>). Later on I was told they couldn't find the stuff and that's why it took awhile though it would have been nice if I'd been told that when I first asked rather than being told they'd get it and not hearing back for a long time. It was similar when I asked for the bed to be set-up; took about 25 minutes for the FA to return to do it. Not certain why it took so long handle some of these requests - there was a lot of cabin staff! I tried the new business seat; love that every seat has aisle access and the seats are very nice. I prefer the SQ wide style seat myself though others may not. Most importantly, SQ only seats 4 per row in business and EK has 6; you definately feel the difference in the amount of space that each passenger gets. Despite some of my nit picks, by any standard except SQ, the service was very good; just very spoiled by SQ and EK has a way to go to match their standards. Bar(s) in biz & F are both very nice; biz area was quite lively and a really nice area though I thought the snacks were a bit "fussy"; in the low cabin humidity, the sandwiches dry out quickly and aren't very appealing; frankly the snacks/junk food that SQ provides is actually nicer. Economy class is all on the lower deck; it was full so I couldn't try a seat though it looked very similar to SQ. The straight walls on the lower deck are interesting and I would agree it makes the cabin feel a bit bigger. The lower deck is broken up by several bulkheads so doesn't feel too massive - overall a very nice design and I'd be hard pressed to pick one (EK or SQ) over the other in economy. ICE system is great; many, many choices and quite similar in quality to SQ. Many recent movies and some great other choices as well. Arrival into JFK was nice; water cannon salute and we arrived right on time. I've flown EK quite a bit and, for better or worse, EK3801 was a pretty typical EK service; I was disappointed as I expect a bit more "special" for a first flight but, even at regular standards, it was a good flight and I will continue to fly EK regularly. Now if only someone would take the SQA380 with it's economy, business and first class seats and install the showers and the bar/lounge area from EK - then you'd have a perfect long-haul aircraft! |
Thanks for the great TR travelguy2500.
I thought they usually hand the PJ's/slippers etc prior to take off? Did you enjoy the shower that much? and what did you have to use it, as in did you have to put your name down on a list etc? Or whenever someone wanted to shower he/she would be next? Cheers |

I agree .. Real disappointing to see nothing special for the EK A380 flight :td: Bummer .. i thought with the EK Suites it would A380>B777ER>A340 but looks like it's A380=B77ER>A340 ? That's exactly what i was thinking too @:-) if SQ had showers it would have it all  :D ^ i dont really think i would spend time at the bar though, i mean it's a nice idea, but i think that space could've been better used with making the seats/suites bigger ! :) |

Please explain how EK has 6 seats per row in J. One row has seats A-E-F-K and next has seats C-D-G-J according to the seat maps I have seen |
