Upgrading on a single leg of multi-sector direct flight...?

Is it possible to use miles to upgrade a single leg of a multi-sector direct flight.

More specifically I'm looking to upgrade using miles just the HKG-BKK segment of EK38x that flies HKG-BKK-DXB even though I'm travelling all the way from HKG-DXB.

So it'll be HKG-BKK J
BKK-DXB Y

Can this be done on a single ticket without having to deplane at BKK?

In theory, it should be. However I am not sure how EK processes upgrades and it may be difficult (but not impossible) to do if you only have a single HKG-DXB e/paper ticket coupon.

Cheers,

Just got off the phone with the local EK office and they said it's not possible unless separate tickets are issued.

Just out of curiosity I'm planning to fly in December and with this trip included I'd have earned 24,850 tier miles. Do you think Skywards will close an eye and upgrade me to silver?
