Upgrading using miles

Help please!

My wife and I have 24,000 miles each that expire next September and I want to put them to good use.

We are thinking about a trip to Dubai next March (around Easter) and so it occurs to me that they best way of using them would be to upgrade from Y-J.

Questions:

1) Am I right in thinking you can upgrade an economy ticket booked in ANY class to J?

2) What fare bucket do upgrades come out of / Is there a limit?

3) We are 1,000 miles short for a o/w upgrade and 26,000 short of a return. As we are not going till March, I could purchase 13k now and 13k on Jan 1st BUT, am I cutting it too fine expecting to find upgrade availability so close to a busy holiday period?

4) Anyone suggest a better use of these miles?

Hi,

1) sure - and that is the good thing about EK - any class can be upgraded

3) as you can only buy 25k miles per year, itīs possible to split it up. If you have your travel dates set, you should watch carefully and book your upgrade asap (January for March should be ok though)

4) not really ;)

Where are you starting from?

Since EK upgrades are always one way, you can confirm the outbound this year and the return next year. However, if you are returning in a busy period then confirm the return first.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice. My head has been turned as I have found seats to South Africa on SAA using my BMI miles in J.

Lets see...
