Gulf Airline to Offer Cellphone Service, With Others in Line

PARIS, Jan. 15 — After years of debate over the use of cellphones aboard airplanes in flight, the moment of truth has very nearly arrived. Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, installed satellite-based technology that allows voice calls and text messaging on one of its Boeing 777’s late last year and expects to begin offering the service to passengers on an international route yet to be announced early next month.

The service has already obtained approval from air safety and telecommunications regulators in 25 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, over about 30 routes that Emirates flies. The carrier expects to outfit its entire fleet with the technology within a couple of years...

The beginning of more air rage I think.

Why do we want the last sanctuary from cell phones taken away from us. I personally will not be responsible if the person next to me spends hours on the phone to demonstrate that the world cannot continue without there input for a few hours.

I agree with previous post,there's always been the in flight phones so why this move?
As I understand it the technology uses a weaker signal than normal cellphones use and if 5 mobiles are in use at the same time that's the limit?
Anyone know anymore about the technology?
