Thank you, I seem to be a bit confused here.
To start with, the last time I upgraded with points from J to F was by setting an alert in MMB. It was a few years ago, recently have been paying for the privilege. Before that, I used Expert Flyer extensively but sadly they don't show awards and upgrade availability anymore So my main current experience (expertise is a big word) is using points to upgrade Mrs t from Y to J.

I am still not sure about the 'which bucket' story.
For J awards, they come from 'O' bucket for saver awards and 'D' bucket for Flex Plus awards. Upgrades come from 'D'. And there you need the return as mentioned.
F awards and upgrades come from 'Z' (or they used to do during the EF days when you could still 'see' them). But you are correct that awards book ONLY as Flex+. My advice would be to ensure that you see the correct amount of miles (as per the mileage calculator) before hitting the upgrade button. When I have the time, I'll 'tinker' a bit more to see if there indeed is only one F upgrade option available.
