EK209 ATH-EWR returning to ATH.

EK209 seems to be returning to ATH, taking quite a weird path. Several unconfirmed rumours are popping up, including the aircraft being denied permission to divert to France/Italy and EK210 (ATH-DXB) being asked to return to the gate as it was preparing for take off.

No official statement from Emirates as of yet.(10NOV - 1930 GMT)

It appears that Greek media is reporting the bit about the aircraft being denied permission to divert to France and Italy.

Was on it tonight, unfortunately. Did some circles around Sardinia, flight deck said France would not let the plane enter airspace.

At passport control back at ATH they seemed to have pictures of two passports that they were looking at. US apparently called in a security threat. EK210 out of ATH held on ground, we weren’t as lucky.

"Further information, Police said the plane was ordered to fly back to Athens due to information relating to an ongoing enquiry but following checks on the passengers and the plane, they did not find the person nor anything suspicious."

I feel so sorry for the innocent passenger who was made to stay on the plane while all the other passengers disembarked. I have the same question as a comment on that post, with the way the pax was suspected and being accused of doing something wrong, who does he get to sue? Definitely not EK, as they were just playing by the rule book.

other reports say Italy also refused!

not only that, it seems they refused to allow them entry into their airspace and had to fly over water!
