I flew DXB-LHR today on a Business Saver redemption and asked for upgrade using miles at checkin. This was denied and I had to ask the Skywards agent in the lounge. I was then told we’d be waitlisted according to status and therefore unlikely to clear as I’m a ‘blue’. She said to go back to desk one hour before departure. We did and to my surprise both my wife and I were upgraded to F so the system does work! Although I always thought you could claim an available seat at checkin rather than being waitlisted. Posting in case it helps someone in a similar position…

Hi- Hoping someone can help me better understand my situation. My wife and I are flying LAX-DXB for our honeymoon on 10/13. She is confirmed in F. I am currently in J (Business Flex award booking). I have been monitoring the upgrade with miles option daily for months but nothing has opened up. Currently only 3 seats left in F so getting nervous that it wont work out. I called Emirates (Dubai number as they seem to know more) last week, and they were able to add me to the First Waitlist. So now when I look at my booking, I have a confirmed J seat listed, but also see a F booking that is shown as ‘Wait List’. But because of this I can no longer click on the ‘upgrade with miles’ option (not that I expect anything to open up). My question is what this wait list really means? Will I have a better chance of getting a seat if there is still one available (x days out, 48 hours out, at check in?)? Is there a way to check where I would be on this wait list? Or will this likely expire at say 48 hours out and then I am in a race against others to get an upgrade at check in? I have the 63k miles I would need for an upgrade in my account. Thanks for any info anyone has!

For the miles upgrade at check in that is now prioritized based on status, whose status does it go by? The account the miles are coming from, or the passenger requesting the upgrade?
here’s the situation: flying JFK-DXB in mid December. I (gold) am in paid F. My family member (blue) is on a J award booking flex plus.
I will be using my miles to request the upgrade for them at check in. So will the priority go based off my gold status or their blue status?
Also, any chance calling will do anything to give my companion any such priority for the upgrade beforehand, since I’m already in paid F? Would be nice to have it confirmed earlier. I will still be gold but for FWIW (probably not much but worth a shot) that JFK-DXB flight will be my platinum qualification flight.

Thanks for the data point! I was under the impression as well (previously) that it was waitlist for upgrades in order of check-in as well, they must have changed this recently. In the past if I'm at an outstation and closer to departure the supervisor will clear my upgrade on the spot. I've never NOT gotten an upgrade that I requested at check in, including at DXB... so this was really disappointing.

One follow up question in case anyone has any insight or has had luck with something similar… I took a look at SFO-DXB as an alternative, and there are still 13 of 14 F seats free for next week (10/13). If we get closer to the day and that is still the case, do you think there is a way that I could switch to that flight from our current LAX-DXB with both of us in F? (Right now my wife is F, and I am J Business Flex Award but have the miles I need for F upgrade). Anyone know if Emirates Customer Service could do something like this far in advance for us to get a quick flight up to SFO? Thanks!

Hello - trying to upgrade from Business to First out of Manchester after Christmas - i've messaged Emirates a few times (generally monthly) and each time they are saying no availability for any flights out of Man-Dxb for any date in Jan or Feb. What are members experiences of upgrading at Check In? I've collected all the miles required and upgraded over the phone in the past.
I note some here are saying it's by status (I'm on the bottom rung!) - Anyone have experience of upgrading at Manchester actually at the check in - until that point I guess there is no difference from travelling in Business ie Chauffeur/Fast Track/Lounge? Last time I flew there were only 3 in 1st. I know it's down to the individual flight - sample dates on Expertflyer are showing loads of empties in First.
Cheers

zero difference in upgrading except the flight itself.
