IAD to BKK - Buy sale Miles for Business Class Upgrade?

I'm applying for a Retirement Visa and Certificate of Entry to Thailand.
I plan to fly from IAD to BKK around the end of November.
Emirates has a $907 USD Economy Business upgrade eligible ticket with 87,750.
Emirates also has a half off miles sale through October..
It would cost me $1332 USD (on sale) to reach 87,750 miles on my Emirates account.
A Business class ticket is $4376 USD.
Is buying miles to upgrade a viable money saving strategy?
What are the chances of not getting upgraded?

Where are you seeing the 50% off sale? To purchase 88,000 miles would cost you $2695 i think?

You can check for upgrade availability on your flight by doing a dummy booking for an award ticket. You need to look for saver award availability in business class on your flight, as this is what you will be upgraded to from Y

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I got a 40% purchase bonus offer this week - so maybe there are different offers for different markets? I actually bought some so I could book a F/J trip to Dubai - which subsequently has been kiboshed.
