Out of sequence tickets permitted ex Italy?
Posting this in the EK forum as came across it while checking a fare ex Italy on emirates.com, where I got the following message:
„For itineraries with a first point of departure in Italy, passengers who miss their first flight for any reason must inform Emirates if they would still like to take any remaining flights in their booking. You’ll need to contact Emirates within 24 hours of the departure time on the unused ticket and at least two hours before your next booked flight. If you fail to contact us in time, your booking will be cancelled and you may be charged the difference between the original fare and the highest cabin class fare when your ticket is reissued.“ It could be implied this means that tickets may be used out of sequence in Italy, at least to the extent that the first sector does not need to be used, without repricing or penalties being applied. Anyone have any experience in this regard? Thanks! |

Good point, have edited my original post accordingly as that is essentially what my guess is/what I was after, since even that can help bring down the cost of tickets in certain scenarios (e.g., combining different carriers, certain open jaws, etc.). Unlikely full out of sequence use would be allowed, and if such legislation was in place, I am sure it would have been widely publicized (not by the airlines ;-) )
Perhaps the moderators could therefore change the title to „Skipping first leg ex Italy?“? Thanks. |
It opens an interesting possibility of Italy being used to reduce cost of ex-DXB flights,if one wanted to fly to Sydney from DXB it might be cheaper to purchase MXP/FCO-DXB-SYD-DXB-MXP and skip the first leg, call EK, then skip the last leg

That would be great. Will check with EK to be sure. Anyone know if this applies in any other countries?

On average, you would save 5-20% on fares if you can route ex-Italy rather than ex DXB to SYD. I checked using ITA Matrix.

One could try this with EK however I would doubt if would get away with it, one time max ,and they would quickly notice it. Non paper tickets are now almost foolproof. |

Many years ago there was famous court case in Netherlands against KLM with similar circumstances ...tickets ex UK via AMS to KL systemwide were cheaper and people/agents would pull the first paper flight coupon, thus allowing boarding in AMS.However in the end I think KL won the judgement ...Which may have been reversed in their favour.

Wasn't there a German case in the last few years where LH had to sell out of sequence tickets - they responded by making them more or similarly expensive to full fare tickets.

Anyone have any experience in this regard? Thanks! Here is the scenario that will likely happen when contacting EK within 24 hours of the unused ticket: - At best, the EK agent might try to price DXB-XYZ-x-DXB-FCO but the system will say no. - They will ask you for the new dates for all sectors, and there will be little point arguing that you are at DXB already and wanting to catch the subsequent flight. The agent will offer a refund/cancel as per fare conditions and ask you to book the other flights. - Will simply say: it is not possible to drop the first sector then proceeds as follows. Now if you miss the first flight and call within 2 hours of the subsequent flight. The likely scenario will be that the EK agent will pull up the penalties and note the no-show penalty then quote the fare rules. FAILURE TO OCCUPY A RESERVED SEAT ON ANY SEGMENT OF THE ITINERARY WILL RESULT IN ALL SUBSEQUENT SEGMENTS OF THE ITINERARY BEING CANCELLED. IN SUCH CASES NO-SHOW FEE WILL APPLY. IN CASE OF NO-SHOW ONLY ONE FEE IS TO BE CHARGED I.E. EITHER THE NO-SHOW FEE OR THE CHANGE FEE WHICHEVER IS HIGHER AND NOT BOTH and IF A PASSENGER FAILS TO TRAVEL ON A SECTOR BOOKED EK RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CANCEL THE REMAINING EK SECTORS. |
I was looking for something unrelated to this on the Etihad website and came across the following which seems to be unambigous. I assume there must be some underlying legislation or court case which explains this. In fact with Etihad, the interpretation appears to be even wider than with Emirates given that it relates to any ticket purchased in Italy and not just a ticket departing ex-Italy.
What do I do if I missed / did not use the first flight part of my ticket which was purchased in Italy? If you have purchased your ticket in Italy, (either from our tickets office, call center, an authorized travel agent or through our website Etihad Airways Global - National Airline of United Arab Emirates) and you have, for any reason missed or didn’t use, the first flight of itinerary, but would still intend to take the subsequent flight (in case the departure of the latter is provided over 12 hours after the arrival of the flight not used) or the return flight initially booked with the same tariff, without any additional payment or fare adjustment, you must contact us within 24 hours following the departure of the unused flight by calling +39 02 23331300 requesting us to hold the validity of remaining flight reservations. If the departure time of the next flight is within the 24 hours from the first flight, you should contact us at least 2 hours before the departure time of the next flight. If you inform your intention in the above manner, we will reissue your Ticket for the remaining itinerary without any additional payment or fare adjustment. If you fail to do so all remaining flight reservations will be canceled and in the event you decide subsequently to travel using such ticket, we will, subject to availability of seats, charge you for the difference between the original ticket purchased and the highest fare in the same class of travel applicable to the modified itinerary at the time of ticket reissuance. In the event the fare rules of the original ticket are more favorable to you, those will be applied. |
