Emirates to launch London Stansted Flights

As reported on Business Traveller - from June 2018, Emirates will be kicking off daily flights from STN using a 777- 300ER. Interesting move but guess one that makes sense.

I'm sure putting the new 777s equipped with the new F and J will make some of the people on this board give STN a try!

Wow! 3 LON airports now served by EK!

Do people think it has anything to do with the horseracing / stables industries around Cambridge / Newmarket?

Also wondering why they keep it on the ground for so long in Stansted - far longer than any of their other European destinations. Is there a Boeing maintainence factory in Stansted.

Also: congrats, and good luck Emirates! I'll be sticking to LGW/LHR as I don't do 10 across 777's but hope it is a success.

10 across? Its 1-2-1 isn't it - or 1-1-1?

I think it has far more to do with a certain village called "London" in Stansted's back yard.

Top of the charts in their destination list, and with the airports already served full with no slots available...

Are there any other scheduled long hauls from STN? I know there have been a few short lived attempts (AA to JFK for one).

Only for cargo.

(Is DXB really "long haul"?)

With the plane apparently sitting on the ground for so long at STN, I wonder if they are considering adding a tag to somewhere else in these sceptred isles??? :D :D :D

I’d guess STN are offering a very discounted rate to get a long haul operator in :D

Plus, I think it’s quite an elegant solution to the conundrum of putting your flagship product on your flagship destination (LON) without sacrificing capacity but buying a new slot at LHR/LGW.

In other words, good use of the marketing budget!

Not for most of us...

Even if I lived over that way, which I did for a short while, i'd much rather land further away at Heathrow or Gatwick than deal with customs at Standstead.

AA only went in to get rid of the two Luton - New York Premium Airlines (one was more Premium Economy) - can't remember both their names - but when they both went bust, AA left sharpish.

Wasn't it also Air Asia's hub for a short lived KUL-STN service? Suspect Tel Aviv is it's current longest flights.

I live in North London, and Stansted is the worst of the 3 main airports for me to reach by public transport. Just checked out Citymapper for departures now - Stansted is 91 minutes, Gatwick 82, Heathrow 63 mins (91 if ignoring the Heathrow express). Even Southend Airport (which is fab) is only 94 minutes away. Stansted has the most connections of the airport. I pretend Luton doesn't exist, but if it did it would only take me 71 minutes to get there. City of course is 54 mins, but I mainly fly long haul so less helpful.

Lots of inbound Ryanair traffic to use as positioning flights if you live in Europe?
