Combination would be my guess. I wouldn't be surprised to see a service via-Switzerland as they have the 5th freedom rights.

Oooh, imagine if it was Zurich to JFK!! The US airlines would never allow that, for Emirates to compete with them on that route, MXP is already a concession. Suddenly to fly from the US to Switzerland would have so much better options

Guess that's bad news for adding back the 2nd daily out of LAX (or SEA, for that matter) if US demand is that low.

Looks like we have the reason:

"Emirates will introduce a new non-stop service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Dubai from 1 June 2018, adding to its existing daily flight which operates with a stop in Athens, Greece."

https://www.emirates.com/media-centr...ht-from-1-june

"The new non-stop service will be operated with an Emirates Boeing 777-300ER, offering 8 suites in First Class, 42 seats in Business, 306 in Economy Class, and 19 tonnes of belly-hold cargo capacity. Flight EK223 will depart Dubai at 0300am and arrive in Newark at 0900am. The return flight EK224 departs Newark at 1150am, arriving in Dubai at 0820am the next day. This new timing complements the existing Emirates service, as it provides travellers with a new option of a morning arrival in Newark, and a morning departure."

I would be surprized if EK went head-to-head with Swiss in ZRH. The other two Europe-US routes are from markets (MXP and ATH) with weak home carriers (Alitalia and Olympic) and where there is no First Class offered. Until they run out of those low hanging fruit, why bother getting into a real fight?

Good point. BUD would be an obvious option then.

I think LOT announced BUD-JFK for this year?? With a 788......probably a bit cheaper than the 77W EK would do. But, do believe another route will come, even if they swap ATH to JFK.

RIP EK208

This seems like a good change overall (more cargo capacity for EK, more access to people living in NJ suburbs, but slightly less seats overall). But I really liked EK208’s late afternoon departure. I live on the other coast now so it doesn’t affect me anymore.

Also, even from Manhattan these days, a taxi ride to EWR is not significantly longer than a taxi ride to JFK anymore - sometimes it takes less time getting to EWR. However, the train service between EWR and Manhattan is laughably bad, and there’s no EK lounge at EWR despite having two daily departures now.

Interesting move overall.

So, looks like the new 2-2-2 Business/First experiment is going full forward. Reminds me of the old Continental Airlines "BusinessFirst" product...

Short BusinessFirst advertising:

and a longer financial analysis justifying the introduction of the BusinessFirst product in 1992:

Looks like history repeats itself!
