Tech stops for AKL nonstop flight (temporary)

Due to the current fuel shortage in AKL (broken fuel pipe), the nonstop AKL flight will apparently have a tech stop in MEL both ways. Yesterday's AKL-DXB was the first affected flight and went via CHC. Until the pipe is fixed (estimated at two weeks), expect late arrival by about 2 hours.

The other EK flights to/from AKL via BNE and MEL, and to/from CHC are not affected.

Presumably pax will be kept on the plane - definitely a long time to be on one aircraft.

"An Emirates spokesman said passengers will not be required to disembark during refuelling and that connecting flights will be rebooked as required"

Yep, a long time stuck inside...

Silly question.... but why would the DXB-AKL flight require the tech stop?

Because they can top up the the tanks at the tech stop to fly across the Tasman and back without the need to refuel in AKL.

Low fuel supplies in AKL courtesy of a pipeline problem - could be 2 weeks before the issue is fixed - so all longhaul flights need to carry enough fuel to be able to get in and out to an alternate refuelling destination. EK appear to have chosen MEL for 448/449, which are now temporarily not so direct between DXB-AKL!
