Just so you know, the best flights for Z class tickets (F award) on that route are: EK414 DXB-SYD and EK415 SYD-DXB. I've done F on both though and they are much less enjoyable for various reasons (early start, coming straight off an EU connection etc).
Flew EK 415 once and despised it. Everyone were waiting outside the airport in the cold coz SYD airport wasn't opened until 3 am. I prefer to pay a bit more for EK 412 / EK 413 flights. Plus since my final destination is Europe, night departure from SYD prevents me from having jetlag on my final destination Few other questions, Does J saver or flex impact the availability of upgrade to F? Also, do upgrade from Y to J is also not automatic nowadays? I remember few years ago I bought Flex Y ticket and can immediately upgrade by miles to J (or D) after completing the payment |
Availability is the same regardless of Saver or Flex. Only difference is the miles cost for upgrade.
If you buy Y flex the option to upgrade immediately is there but this depends on availability. IME there is often a bit of D availability ex-SYD that makes paying for J a bit pointless if you have the miles. I’m trying to book J and fly F at the moment though. |

Sydtogla, How succesfull are you usually in paying J but sitting (or lying down) in F ? I have been "studying" EF award & upgrades and man... this is so random and confusing. According to EF: EK 417 flying tonight has 8 empty seats in F but no Z available (plane is flying in 14hrs, so I'd presume most seat has been allocated, especially premiums) EK 413 flying tonight has 3 empty seats in F and Z is listed as "yes" ... what on earth?? Don't you think the 8 free slot on EK 417 are more open for upgrade opportunity? |

that close to departure Z availability is irrelevant, as one can upgrade at airport By the way, I happened to look on MMB at a booking in J I have for next week. There was an ‘upgrades are available’ messages so I clicked on it out of curiosity (not planning to upgrade as I have a J Saver booking which costs too many miles to upgrade). Strangely it showed that an upgrade was available for a leg which showed as unavailable on EF! |
If you want to scout out the SYD-DXB routes, I tend to look at the trends T-7 days. Of course, it can get quite random because of all kinds of holidays. For example, I have no chance of D next week because it is Greek Easter and the amount of families going between to and from Eastern Australia and Greece is huge. But then 2 weeks later, I can find D and Z scattered.
When I spoke about almost always upgrades, I usually mean a combination of in advance and then at the airport. Anything not to fly in Y. |

Indeed. As far as I understand it’s pointless to look for Z (or any upgrade) availability after T-72. From that moment it is only check-in, lounge or on board upgrades. Maybe the call centre can still perform magic at that stage? By the way, I happened to look on MMB at a booking in J I have for next week. Hello All,
Decided to treat parents to fly J from TPE -> CDG in August which will stop in DXB. Currently TPE -> DXB is available to upgrade to F with points for both going and returning, but both legs from DXB to CDG are unavailable. Does anyone have experience with the availability for DXB to CDG? When can I expect it to open up if at all... Many thanks, Wayne |
