Good for you, enjoy! I find that on more and more flights they only release miles upgrades at time of check-in or more often when check-in closes, even when flights are half empty  Suspect this is because they try to flog paid upgrades to the last minute, and are also able to restrict the use of the chauffeur service and lounges this way. |
I’ve got an active auto upgrade on CPT - DXB which is notoriously difficult to get upgrades. Holding thumbs. |
Sorry for hijacking your thread, but what is the deal with auto-upgrade? I’ve attempted to use it twice now, and on both occasions reviewed my existing booking while making new bookings and have found that i’ve been able to upgrade. If I was able to upgrade, should the auto-upgrade not have triggered? |
I would think it probably should have but I don't know how long before T it is triggered. I fly on Tuesday.
|
Automatic upgrade question.
I’m hoping to upgrade a flight in March, DXB to DUB from business to first with miles. There are 2 of us travelling on the same ref. If we enable auto upgrade through the app is there a possibility that only one pax would get upgraded or would it be either both or neither? (edit: apologies for posting in the wrong place. The result of searching for ‘automatic upgrade’ rather than ‘auto upgrade’!) |

It appears to me that mileage upgrades through MMB are always done for all passengers on the booking. There is even a 'warning' on the upgrade page to this effect. So I would expect that auto upgrade (which after all is initiated through MMB) would be treated the same way.
Therefore, without wanting to suggest this is a definitive response, my take is that it is an 'all or no-one' situation. 1.The app and the web page state that an auto upgrade will only be processed between 30 days and 72 hours before a flight. Does this mean that if upgrades become available prior to the 30 days you could miss out to someone who hadn’t enabled auto upgrade? 2. It also states, as you said, that all passengers on the booking will be upgraded and miles will be deducted from your account. In my case my wife and I both have enough miles for an individual upgrade but neither of us have enough miles for the 2 upgrades. What might happen in this case? Is the system smart enough to deduct the miles from each passengers account rather than trying to deduct them all from one account? |
I would suspect (1) is yes and (2) the system will try to take all the miles from the lead booker and the upgrade will fail.

Who has been succesfull with auto upgrade?q
I'm flying DXB-MEL in a week or so and I have enough miles to upgrade my flex+ ticket to Biz. i've selected the auto upgrade function but I haven't used this before. I've heard that sometimes reward seats become available before Emirates publishes them so I wonder if it's a good plan to just contact the chat help desk every day to check seats? -anyone have any experience with this?
thanks in advance. |
Generally no luck unless T-48 to departure. Also I'd rather call, not sure the chat guys can do upgrades
|
solid advice, thanks!
|
It has worked for me.
But everytime I have used it I have wanted to upgrade two sectors. It has only upgraded one sector and then the second at a later date. It then does not then discount the savings as two sectors combined are normally less miles than two sectors individually. A call to EK has always sorted it out and they have put it through as a combined sector upgrade . I find EK staff in the US are more helpful than EK in DXB when calling to do this. |
Thank you!! I think I will definitely call them :) XXX

One thing you can do is to use ExpertFlyer - they have an excellent Award & Upgrade search. Simply search your route for the right class (Z for First upgrades, D for Business) and create an alert, it can e-mail you when things become available. Free for 7 days and USD 10 per month after, and you can turn it on and off subscription as you wish.

I'm also flying to Melb on the 17th, are you on EK 408? |
DXB-DUB flights in F are usually pretty empty since they put both flights to 3 tiers & mileage upgrades are often shown very early. I would be surprised if you couldn’t upgrade both of you.

So. I've been chasing an upgrade from flexi saver to business on EK406 from DXB-MEL for a week now. Had auto upgrade set but have passed the 72 hour window. Still no upgrade and expert flyer says 18 seats free in biz . -i've been calling and chatting to the help desk to see if there is availability and there is none, then right after i hung up the phone this morning I get an email saying I have been selected for a special one time only upgrade offer to pay 35.100 skywards for an upgrade (instead of the 54k that I have that I intend to use for this flight) . -imagine how annoyed I was! however upon clicking the link, it still says there is no availability..... I only opened the link maybe 5 mins after the email was sent so possibly they opened one seat only and someone else got there first.... But still it baffles me!!

They wanted you to hold out for a cheaper upgrade; 18,900 miles saving is a lot. Try again at the airport but you will pay full miles |
Sorry i meant flex plus.
So this morning I tried the 35k upgrade email again and low and behold I got a seat in business. -woop! |
Recent experience....
Flying SYD-DXB with a J Flex ticket. I had both auto-upgrade selected AND notifications set on EF for any Z availability. Spoke with EK call centre a week out, and they confirmed no award seats available, however only 3 of 14 seats had been booked (which corroborated with EF). T-96 - I checked the EK App, and sure enough an upgrade was available. No auto-upgrade / no notifications from EF. On the upside, it coincided with the Skywards 25 Million Members promotion, so I managed to pay 25% less in points. |

I was in Ethiopia with no internet access, but luckily visited a hotel with internet available 4 days before and incredibly received notification 10 minutes later. EF was showing 8 empty seats in F and up until the airport took control, no other seats were taken, and I must assume I was the only Z upgrade. F was full on that trip so probably the balance was checkin and onboard upgrades. This is the first time I have used auto upgrade, with low expectations due to previously documented experiences of FT members. But it worked well for me. |

I am sorry for resurrecting this thread, but has anyone had recent experiences in using Auto Upgrade as EK Platinum, versus requesting to be waitlisted through the call centre?
My typical process when for whatever reason I get booked in J has always been to call up asking for an upgrade to F with miles. If there is no availability as Platinum they can waitlist the upgrade and I have had a 100% success rate in getting it cleared at least one week prior to departure. Tonight I called EK to do the usual and was told that if waitlisted through the phone I would have a lower priority than if doing it through Auto Upgrade. Hung up and called again, only to be told the same (much to my surprise!). I had always been under the impression that the manual waitlist would put Plats into a better position rather than using the Auto Upgrade function. Has this changed? Any experiences? |
Bumping up this thread.
Have a Europe - DXB ticket for this weekend and see the autoupgrade option from Business to First. I have signed up for the autoupgrade - however, any recommendation on whether I should speak to the call center - will that help in any way to expedite the request? |

Yes, ask the call centre as well. Auto upgrade is notoriously unreliable. Of course J to F upgrades are (depending on where in Europe you are starting the trip) often quite difficult to get.

Bumping this thread. Are they difficult due to limited availability (i.e. all F seats are sold) or as EK doesn't release them?
