Still the walk - there's only one two level airbridge gate at LGW!

Same here. I first used LGW because it’s very convenient for me as our son leaves 20 minutes away. But it’s so much less of a zoo than LHR that I now much prefer it as an airport. And seeing that you are going to be sitting down for about 7 hours (ok, minus any bar and / or shower time ), the walk to the gate is not a problem.

1. For people for whom a 10 minute walk is a problem (I accept they are there), there will undoubtedly be wheelchair assistance available.
2. When said person arrives in Dubai (or virtually any other airport in the world), the walk to immigration, the luggage claim or the lounge for the next flight will most certainly be more than 10 minutes.
There are actually quite a few airports where lots of people walk 10 minutes to the gate. And very few where one boards from the lounge (however much I enjoy that, to be honest!)

And those in wheelchairs(and accompanying pax) I note often go to front of the lines. They have no need to complain.

I (actually we, as the doctor was sitting next to me) were flying J. The doctor (who had never been to CPT) suggested we take a wheelchair (which was offered) in CPT, as this would get us to the front of the immigration queue. I declined, because I knew that there was no other (big) international flight coming in at that time and being off the plane (almost) first, we would get to an empty immigration hall. Which was indeed the case. A wheelchair would have been a PITA as they probably would have taken us off the plane last.....
But yes, in big busy airports I can imagine that a wheelchair would help in negotiating the queues. Not that I would give up my mobility for that 'benefit'.....

That's good news - presumably you mean 2019? Any major works planned/happening there?

Thanks for all your replies, looks like we will give EK16 at LGW a go then. Regarding the walk to the gate we are both young and able bodied, was just gauging how many G&Ts I could have in the lounge before the stagger to the gate! 😜

As far as G&Ts are concerned, probably an ULH journey to the gate, so eligible for an extra 'one for the road' one.

When will you be on EK16? If it is 18 Feb, we can lean on each other if we have overdone it on the G&T front.

I usually fly from LGW. The lounge is nice and is quite big considering there is only one EK flight departing and the Lounge Dragons are very friendly. It's free-pour Moet and self serve drinks. The food is pretty good. The staff will make an announcement when the flight is ready to board and they also walk around as well. By the time you get to the gate, most Y pax have boarded. I've done the LHR flight to Dubai as well and I much prefer LGW. T3 is a zoo and what a mess they have made of the shopping area you have to meander around. The only advantage at LHR is direct boarding from the lounge, but to be honest, I don't mind the short walk at LGW.
