delayed luggage
My daughter recently returned to the UK from Hong Kong flying with Emirates. She had a 3 hr connection in Dubai. Unfortunately on the Dubai - Manchester flight she was told that her luggage had not made the flight but would be put on the next flight, and would be brought straight to her hotel. She landed in Manchester very early morning and she was told that her luggage would be with her by 2.00 p.m. She waited at the hotel until 2.00p.m. but no luggage turned up and as she had a 3.30 work meeting she subsequently had to go to the shops to buy a complete outfit for her meeting! Does anyone know if she
can claim from EMirates for the cost of the outfit she had to buy? Her luggage did eventually turn up after 6.00 p.m. I know there is compensation for delayed luggage but it seems to be if it is delayed for days rather than hours! HOw would she go about claiming for this?? She did receive a reference number from Emirates! Thanks Maureen |
Yes she can claim off of Emirates, though if she has a decent delayed baggage coverage on a credit or charge card ( e.g. AMEX can have very good delayed luggage payments ) would be easier to claim there

You say "returned" which indicates she was on the way home. She would normally be expected to have other clothes at home that she could wear.

Thanks for the replies! My daughter is actually living and working in Hong Kong, and was coming for a meeting in the Manchester Office. We live about 30 miles away so she stays
most of the time in a Hotel in Manchester for convenience Her meeting was the afternoon of her arrival so she had no alternative but to go out and purchase a suitable outfit, as obviously she felt she could not arrive for her meeting in the same clothes she had travelled in for over 15 hours! The delayed luggage did not arrive early afternoon like emirates said t would but it did arrive after 6 p.m. in the evening. Her works travel department booked the flight so it would be easier if she claimed through emirates herself. I dont seem to see anything on line how to go about with this claim? There is a little bit of a lesson here, which is that, whatever clothes/material you need on the day of arrival you should probably have in your carry on luggage. That said, airlines are usually pretty good in paying out in these instances, as are travel insurance providers, subject to submission of receipts and the general rule that you should buy things that you wouldn't expect to have reimbursed. This typically applies only to the destination, rather than at the final return.

EK compensate baggage delay if you are not returning home.
Recently I got 100USD per delayed day at outstation. This is clearly not enough to replace a business outfit ... Anyway, lesson learned, I'll have a complete set in by cabin luggage from now on. And, also recently, I got nothing for a delay at home. I was quite pissed off as I had gifts to be handed at dinner the very evening, and as I had another trip the following morning (not with EK), but such things happen ... |

The Montreal Convention also states nothing about home and has a section on delayed baggage. Since both UK and China are signatories to the convention, would seem to apply
I seem to recall that the Warsaw Convention also has no mention about home either
