EK20 MAN-DXB left 4hr15min

What is going on? All this delay?

g1ant Mar 26, 2016 7:38 pm

Inbound flight was diverted to LHR after three aborted attempts to land at MAN.

Finally airborne, after 5h5m

Dave Noble Mar 26, 2016 8:26 pm

Unless the reason for delay is something extraordinary , should be able to get EUR600 compensation under EC261

Weather I assume?

Computer said "No!"

Apparently the FMS kept telling the pilots the runway was "too short"for a safe landing.

Quite why the pilot decided to divert to LHR instead of taking over and flying the plane is unclear.... perhaps they were scared that Emirates would fire them for actually daring to fly the plane rather than just monitoring the computer while it flew the plane ?

Dave Noble Mar 26, 2016 10:42 pm

I think it more likely that they would be concerned with ignoring a safety system that was telling them not to land. Whether automatic or manual, I doubt that there are many pilots which will ignore a system telling them not to

In this case , it would seem that the delay to departure would definitely be entitled to EUR600 compensation

Pretty strong winds yesterday in Manchester, but nothing too bad.

A similar thing happened to the inaugural QR A350 flight from JFK to DOH, except in that case the computer decided that the runway wasn't long enough to take off. So, it aborted the take off, much to the amusement of the press and dignitaries on board :)

I don't understand this - surely the pilots disable that and land the plane where 2 A380s land every day...?

I know A380s are sensitive but this is a bit daft - so did the plane land in London then fly up to Man after a few hours?

I'd be very annoyed at this.

If you disable one safety feature, perhaps you disable more?

Yes - flew up from LHR after I assume after the issue was sorted and it was refuelled.

The first 2 attempts were on the normal landing runway. On the third attempt, they used the left runway, which is very rarely used for landings when approaching from the NW.

Dave Noble Mar 27, 2016 4:36 am

I would be very surprised if they were to ignore the messages and carry on regardless

Suppose something did happen - press would have a field day with "reckless pilot ignores safety warnings"

Emirates did a good job, offered each of us £15 for food and drinks.

Because of the delay missed the connection in DXB but they rebooked us.

What compensation are we entitled to?
2x adults
1x child (5)
1x infant (1)

If you arrived at destination and doors of aeroplane were open > 4 hours after scheduled arrival time , then 4 x EUR600 ;
If > 3 hours but no more than 4 hours , then 4 x EUR300

there is no variation based on age of passenger
