New 777 J seat announced

Let's see!

Good:
"...fully flat sleeping position at 180 degrees"

Bad:
"Emirates will retain its current layout of 2-3-2 across...as well as total number of Business Class seats per aircraft at 42."

No mention of whether they will retrofit existing 777s.

I don't think it was really realistic, revenue wise, for them to go to 1-2-1 or even 2-2-2, but good to hear an upgrade is finally happening!

Also this gem:
The seat retains Emirates’ colour tones of dark and light grey, accentuated with burled walnut veneers around the personal inflight entertainment screen, centre console, mini-bar and privacy panel, in keeping with the airline’s distinctive cabin interior colour palette.

Well and truly disappointing that they will be retaining the 2-3-2 layout.

IMHO, the most humorous part is :
Our current Boeing 777 Business Class seats are already an industry-leading premium product

Better than industry average : yes
Industry-leading : no

Everyone gripes about the middle seat of 3, but with only 6 out of 42 seats they can be avoided most times.

If they removed it, the other seats could be bigger though

Then again, there would have to be a corresponding fare increase to pay for it to preserve revenue, so I think we'll live!

Retaining the middle seat in any modern-day bus class config ..... it's just wrong, wrong, wrong

Don't give them any ideas, they might add an aisle to the middle of the cabin and go 2-2-2-2 - hey presto, no middle seat!

Who knows ....??!!

To be honest, I'm no longer sure exactly where EK wants to position themselves these days ; but it seems clear they're no longer looking to be innovative or class-leaders (whatever the marketing spiel may say .....)

Just last week I spent 11.5 hours on an Air NZ 777 with a very agreeable (even though a near-full cabin of 26 capacity) 1-2-1 config, and found myself thinking how less pleasant it would have been on Emirates.

A sad reflection, given just how much I've always liked EK and how much I would like to continue to do so.

Let's move past the 2-3-2 and focus on the other stuff hinted at in the article:
The design and shape of Emirates’ new Business Class seat was inspired by the interior of a modern sports car, captured in the diamond stitch pattern of a light grey full leather cover, ergonomically designed headrest, and its sleek overall look and feel. Designed with enhanced customer comfort in mind, the new seat has a pitch of 72 inches and can be electrically moved into a fully flat sleeping position at 180 degrees.

Retaining many of the most popular features of the current Business Class seat on Emirates’ Boeing 777s, the updated seat layout and additional amenities feature a conveniently located mini-bar, one of the industry’s largest personal TV screens at 23 inches, and the latest touchscreen controller for the seat and award-winning ice inflight entertainment system.

Customers will have a USB port to charge their devices, a HDMI port to stream content from their personal devices directly onto the IFE screen, as well as improved lighting options for reading as well as relaxing in their seat. Emirates also redesigned the privacy panel between seats, the literature pocket, foot rest, shoe stowage area, and expanded the personal meal table.
Fully leather will be interesting, potentially quite nice, compared to the current fabric, but I always worry about sweating on leather seats. Though the first class seats do quite well here. The HDMI port is an interesting additiion and I'm curious what the thinking is here. Will there be an actual HDMI cable to pull out and plug in or are they expecting people to carry an HDMI cable with them. And to use it would one need to have the laptop open in front on the tray table?

The mini bar also interesting as on the 777s currently there is no such concept

The HDMI port I expect will be similar to the newest generation IFE that is already deployed on the fleet - 1x fully powered USB port as part of the power socket panelling (thus likely independent of the IFE system) and one interface panel with 1x USB and 1x HDMI slot; basically, bring your own cable.

The mini bar concept is overrated imho - it's just a glorified space to put cans and bottles (not even refrigerated). I'd rather put my own things there.

If it's anything like JAL, it'll be a huge improvement.

They've got 2-3-2 on their 777s and the product is excellent.

https://www.jal.co.jp/en/newsky/ss7/business/seat/

They also have a very indicative website which makes it very clear ^

Also, with a 23'' screen and a bit of storage space next to the seat where you could put a "mini bar"

Yes, it would be excellent. And if EK could also copy JL Y, it would also be a huge improvement. But given EK Y load, I'm not very optimistic.

Current minibar (F and C) is not really justified, because it is not refrigerated (as eternaltransit mentioned). Apart from the bottle of water, the rest is a total waste of fuel, particularly concerning bottles made of glass.

BTW, does anybody know why Sunraysia juices is now replaced by a second Voss on C A388 ? (F minibar still has it)
