This announcement seems to indicate that EK412/413 will now route DXB SYD CHC instead of DXB SYD AKL. That may imply changes to the current EK418/419 DXB BKK SYD AKL route as well.

A380 x 5 daily to NZ? What a crazy airline! Must be doing well.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of passengers on the Trans-Tasman flights are continuing onto Dubai. Based on the introduction of EK449 I can speculate that prior to EK449, at least 1/3 of passengers on the trans-Tasman flights were continuing onto Dubai.

Well if they pick up another 2/3 from SYD to DXB or fill with cargo then they're still making $$. They must be making $ already to make the switch to the A380. I don't know what loadings are like from CHC-SYD but AKL-east coast Oz was chocka during peak season TT on NZ and EK wide bodies last yr and felt like it went from Oct-Feb/Mar - long peak!

The change from AKL-SYD-DXB to AKL-SYD-BKK-DXB also provides another way to BKK for NZ vs Thai direct or via SIN with alternative carriers. Actually might be a good positioning flight to Asia to pick up cheaper fares out of BKK on other carriers in general to UK/Europe. Cheap stopover eg accommodation.

Is there any indication that there will be AKL-SYD-BKK-DXB or just supposition at this stage?

I read it here. Reliable website for down under flyers. If I only I could post it correctly... sorry maybe the copy paste of lower one is the better way to go.

They were also very quick in having the news up. I just happened to pick the first result from Google News.

I actually think it was their Q&A section someone linked ?aviation herald noting EK had requested the A380 to CHC a wee while ago. It's an interesting website to snoop around and yes you're quite right they are fairly quick off the mark. I like their objectivity and they seem quite professional in their interaction with readers. The ensuing comments generally make for interesting/entertaining reading.

Yikes I'm giving the Australians some credit

Before I saw the switch of the 777 flight to AKL and an A380. I was half wondering if they were going to use the 777 to compete with SQ into Wgtn. But given the full info that isn't happening.

EK448 DXB-AKL spends 10 hours in Auckland each day from 10:10 am to 8:15pm. I can help but wonder what EK could to with that A380 during that time. Air NZ sends their 777s and 787s to the Islands and AUS during the day. Apart from CHC which I don't think has the necessary demand for an A380 AKL-CHC return each day. And apart from SYD/BNE/MEL which EK and QF seem to adequate service, the only logical destination I can see is Nadi, Fiji.

NAN is being redeveloped and the Fijians seem to think that Emirates is going to start flying there sooner or later (and it sure isn't going to the direct DXB-NAN).

I don't think any of the other South Pacific destinations have either the demand or runway length for an A380.

EK Source is surmising that one of the other inbound flights will "swap" with EK418 and become EK419 on the return, due to the time on the ground.
