LHR-DXB-SIN

My wife and I have 'splashed' out on EK business seats on A80 from LHR to SIN, via DXB.

We have no experience of such long flights and wonder how best to deal with sleeping, etc. I thought I would enjoy the champagne on the LHR to DXB leg, get some exercise at DXB, then tery and sleep on the 2nd leg.

How do you regulars deal with these long flights?

Probably too late, but taking a short stopover would be best. Then you can then do day flights all the way :)

I drink through :D

In all seriousness two flights of similar length are fine - I'm good up to 7/8 hours.

The official advice is to set your watch to your destination time as you set off, then plan your timetable accordingly. In reality it usually works out differently. I would say do as your body tells you. If you're tired, sleep. If not, there is a bar on the A380 where you can socialise, stretch your legs etc. After flying to Australia from UK many times ( in economy) and dreading the flight every time, we also have splashed out and booked business class in Jan, spending the kids inheritance This time we are actually looking forward to it ( but may think differently when we get there after 24 hr flight). Mostly, I would say, just relax & enjoy yourselves.

Thanks for the replies. After flying Y for many years, it's certainly mostly a pleasure in J and far less stressful pre-flight, worrying about legroom etc.

Considering a sleeping pill for DXB-SIN.

did this flight last year - albeit 777 from GLA-DXB first then 380 DXB-SIN.
I did exactly as you are proposing - although a quick nightcap at the bar on board was very beneficial !
enjoy

As #2 says-two day flights is the way to go.
We are doing such that this week, arriving in DXB at 21.00hours supper in the Lounge then overnight airside hotel (booked early at UAED420) then an easy day flight next morning-loads of opportunity for fizz.
SS

Why have dinner in the lounge? Get out into dubai the weather is amazing and there are so many amazing places to eat other than the airport lounge!!! :D

^^

That said, baggage reclaim was poor yesterday - 45 minutes for my bag to arrive in the middle of the Y bags. Usually I wouldn't care, but I missed at least 75 minutes of drinking and feasting :D

LHR-DXB-SIN is not so long route, especially in J. I'm life-long Y-er but can handle such routes with no major problems. My rule is to find such schedule to arrive in late afternoon/evening and go to sleep. I then start the new day per local time. I don't think long layover is beneficial as it only prolongs the travel time.

Do I take that to mean that J bags are normally unloaded before Y bags?

They are normally unloaded first. When you check them in the staff should label them as priority baggage so that they can be identified by the staff handling luggage. It doesn't always work, though. On one occasion on a flight from Brisbane to Singapore, my wife's bag did not appear - it had been sorted with bags going on to Dubai. Fortunately the EK staff were able to get it off the lane before it departed to Dubai. Priority is no guarantee of delivery, or even of prompt delivery. It is good when it works, though.

If an IO is onboard, receiving GHA will receive a request email upon the departure of the aircraft for it to unload, on arrival, the baggage of the IO first and will be told in which container (ULD) it is located.

Then F class ULD(s) will be unloaded (which should include any Platinum Card Holder baggage travelling in J or Y too).

Then J class ULDs (which should include any Gold Card Holder baggage travelling in Y too).

Finally Y...................

I'd be in Sukhothai about 45 minutes after landing...

Which may be the case very soon if tomorrow's call goes well!

When? We need to catch up. Coming home 23-29th Dec - are you going to the Chelsea match?

Back to topic this has been very consistently the case for us the last 3 years.

I didn't realise how much I relied on it unconsciously until recently when I had it fail at CHC (no big deal, it's quite efficient) and DXB!

This is with tags on correctly and all status in system: I think the handlers hate me :D
