Milan Stopover
Is it possible to actually schedule a stopover in Milan without a huge price increase? When I book JFK-BOM and select the direct flight via Milan to Dubai, the fare rules say I can have one free stopover in Milan. But when I try doing a multi-segment trip with 2 days in Milan, the J round-trip jumps from $5K to $18K.
I called and the agent told me that was the only way to book it, and that the increase was due to different availability. The JFK-MXP and MXP-BOM segments all price the same for each day of travel (in fact, for all +/- 5 days that I searched) so that doesn't seem logical. The help page on the web says I can select a stopover on the "stopover tab" on the booking page, which I've never seen. I've booked a Dubai stopover before at near-zero cost, and would like to try this in Milan, but I can't seem to find how to make it work. Ideas? |
How long a stopover do you want? Sometimes you can get up to a 24hr stopover by booking direct but finding the longest connection (i.e. enter JFK-BOM but find the option with the longest MXP connection).
Otherwise an alternative would be to book the flight but in Flex/Flex Plus then later call and try change the MXP-DXB-BOM segments to a later date. The problem I could foresee is that if you don't usually exit the aircraft in MXP (not sure how the transfer works there) that you would theoretically have a single flight from JFK-DXB booked regardless of MXP stop, and to add the stop would require two one-ways. |

I was looking to stopover for 2 days - spend an afternoon and the next day in Milan, as I did in Dubai a couple of years ago. Given the oddity of a Milan connection on EK, I think I'll toss the question at one of my travel agents but assume it probably won't work.
I was looking at leaving JFK 1/25, 1/26, or 1/27, though plans are exploratory/not finalized. It it accurate that through pax have to stay on the plane? |
