Tipping Emirates chauffeur drive

If you do, how much and where are you located?

Zol Oct 21, 2013 2:05 pm

Yes

$/£/EUR 5 - 10 equivalent

More if they diverted, waited a while etc

jackiedada Oct 21, 2013 2:27 pm

BOM- INR 500
UK - GBP 10
CDG - EUR 15

Of course, all of this if the driver has been polite, courteous, and helped out with my luggage.

diontd Oct 21, 2013 2:37 pm

£17 at LHR for being very polite, and helping us with our many bags.

edy4eva Oct 21, 2013 3:09 pm

DXB - 15-30AED depends on distance, would be more if I was to go outside Dubai
SYD/MEL/BNE/CBR - 10-20AUD depends on amount of luggage
AKL - 15NZD
SIN - 10SGD
LHR - 10GBP (think it was a bit more, almost 20USD equiv)

nadeem Oct 21, 2013 3:16 pm

DXB 15-20 AED
MAN - £5 seems to be acceptable, as am not many miles away from airport.

INR 500 for BOM seems a bit on the high after considering the equivalent cost of living compared to other countries (I know BOM is an expensive city but you have to consider general salary).I give INR 100-200 at DEL

At London airports I give approx £10

DXB 20-30 dirhams depending on distance .

I just check how much a regular taxi costs and give around 1/4 to 1/3 of it depending on how good the driver was.

Similar here. 20-30 AED at DXB, ~10 USD equivalent in Europe, a little less in lower income countries. If the service was exceptional a little more.

Edit: Come to think of it, one driver insisted on not taking any tips.

You are absolutely correct and the only reason I give that high a tip is because if I have to rent a car at 2 am in the night, the cab company charges me 1,500. None of radio/ fleet taxi operators want to send their taxis for plying that short a distance so I have to approach a car rental company. So, that's just a way of saying 'Thank you EK!' - win win for both of us. I have given only 100 rs when the driver was either 'smelly' or wasn't driving well.

PS: You also have to factor that its not an ordinary taxi - its a Merc. And Mercs have a special 'status' symbol in India....

Only ever once in CPT when they waited for my companion coming off another flight.

I was early so the wait was much longer than planned. 200 ZAR

I agree that the mercs are special status but the driver does not own it . EK is paying the chauffeur drive company (its Carzonrent at Delhi) at BOM. I'm not sure if the driver is paid per trip or not.

I had a conversation with a driver from a similar set up at DEL(not Carzonrent) and they were paid 15000 INR per month (around £150)and were doing shift work (24 hours on 24 hours off ) .They had a dorm kind of place apparently and could be sleeping when not called. This was around 18 months ago so the salary might be higher now.

Assuming a daily income of 600 INR , a 500 INR tip might be a bit out of place IMHO. I would be a bit vary of OTT tipping in India with wide social disparity. You do get marked and though I'm sure the drivers are all vetted and all you can never be sure.

However I assume you would'nt have any issues considering your username.:D

w00t Oct 22, 2013 12:50 am

DXB: 20-25 AED
GER: 10 EUR
Rest of the World: ~ equiv 15 USD

Ok, thats a good point. Never thought of that. 500 bucks isn't that much OTT but will definitely give it more consideration now.

Ha!

Being somewhat Australian, tipping is not a major part of my culture (dual national AU/UK).

I have taken limos in the UK and France several times and have never tipped. In fact the drivers expected not to be tipped IMHO and smiled all the way.

But I can see the sub-continent is a different matter.
