I'm wondering if anyone can help;

I'm arriving at BKK on QR829 from Hanoi at around 6.30pm on a seperate ticket. I'm connecting to EK384 in Economy which departs at 1.35am :o I am thinking that once clearing immigration, collecting luggage etc. I will be at BKK departures around 7.30, maybe 8pm. Will I be able to check in for my flight at this time? I know the standard is 3 hours before departure but since Emirates has a flight leaving around 9.20pm, will check-in be available for my flight as well? I'd rather check in early and head airside than wait in the check in area for two/three hours.

Check in at BKK is open all day long - you'll be able to check-in around then yes.

You may be able to get QR to check your luggage onto EK384 to save the hassle of getting out at BKK to collect luggage, check-in & come back in.

Even if your reservations are made on two separate bookings, some airlines will tag your luggage onto the other carrier's flight. CX have done this for me twice in the last few months on my SIN-BKK (CX) connecting onto BKK-AUD (EY) and also SIN-BKK (CX) onto BKK-DXB(EK). You will have to get your boarding pass for EK384 at the transfer desk at BKK so have a copy of your EK reservation handy to get through the transit point.

Of course, some airlines will say they cannot even though they can.... and BA is one of them!

PS:
If QR check your luggage on to connecting EK384, you must give the BKK EK transit check-in staff your (QR issued) luggage tag so that they can enter the tag no into EK's system.

I did think about this but thought that there's no way EK and QR would have this kind of arrangement with each other ;) i'll definitely ask when I check in in Hanoi though, thanks! :)

I can confirm this - including 12 hours in the BKK lounge :D

EK384 leaves BKK for HKG but not at the time you say. If your leaving at 01:35 I expect your travelling on EK385 to Dubai.

If I'm right the flight before yours is at 21:20 and check in closes between these two despite the posts above, unless it's changed in the past few months.

BKK often has one desk open throughout but it's not guaranteed - I've been there to check in for EK385 with nothing open because I'm too early.

Yeah, I meant EK385 - apologies. Hopefully i'll arrive at check-in before it closes for the previous flight then :) What is BKK like landside? Any bars/restaurants or anything? Never been before!

BKK landside have small restaurants on level 3. Nothing special but ok. There is also a Thai coupon center for food on level 1 near door number 8 but I think it close at 9 pm.

With the schedule back to 6 daily, the check-in desks are open all the time except for 0300-0500 (and even then there may be someone there who can do it). However, the check-in staff are contracted and sometimes all change shift/have food/gossip at the same time (e.g. around 1800 or 2200) or have staff meetings in the office which is not in the main part of the terminal. Their standard procedure is to have one or two staff at the desks or at the very far end if you are facing the security checkpoints where they do standby travel etc. during the times when most of the check-in staff are absent.
