Missed flight on a round ticket

Hello all,

I seek your guidance.

My friend had a round ticket Tokyo-Dubai-Lisbon Lisbon-Dubai-Tokyo. She missed the departure from Tokyo. The ticket was not bought directly from Emirates, but through airtickets24.com. When she missed the departure she got an email that her whole ticket has been cancelled. The phone call to airtickets24.com confirmed it - they said that they cannot do anything, they can just inquire in Emirates for refund.

Well, I am afraid that there will be no positive information about a refund. Is there anything she can do? First she tried to call Emirates, but they said she needs to talk with airtickets24.com.

I will be very grateful for any help,
Lech

If you miss a sector, all following sectors on the ticket are voided. That's normal.

Refunds depend on the ticket type. Terms and Conditions should tell her more.

EK would refund the agent, and the agent refunds your friend. They may also take a processing fee (in some cases horrendous).

Thanks for an answer. The travel agency already replied. The refund is... 39.10 euro. So almost nothing and of course the tickets for similar flights are much more expensive now. Well, that was to be expected.

Did your friend have travel insurance?

Travel insurance? The chances that this will pay out will depend on the reason that the flight was missed.

Unfortunately no travel insurance. I guess then it would be much easier.

No chance for paying 'no-show' fee and price difference between this ticket and new ticket(if applied)?

Such a terribly expensive way to learn about the importance of travel insurance.

(I know no travel insurance will cover every eventuality.)

According to the travel agency, this small refund is the only option. And about travel insurance - right, an important thing it seems.

Very better if she has insurance. Insurance company fight for her.

Not always. Depends on whether the eventuality is covered. For example, better policies will cover things like failure to arrive at the airport due to public transport failure.

When we book ticket on emirates.com we can always check Fare Conditions
It is something like:
'FAILURE TO OCCUPY A RESERVED SEAT ON ANY SEGMENT
OF THE ITINERARY WILL RESULT IN ALL SUBSEQUENT
SEGMENTS OF THE ITINERARY BEING CANCELLED. IN SUCH
CASES REEBOOKING WILL INCUR A CHARGE OF PLN600.00.
------
IN CASE OF NO-SHOW ONLY ONE FEE IS TO BE CHARGED
I.E. EITHER THE NO-SHOW FEE OR THE REISSUE/
REVALIDATION FEE WHICHEVER IS HIGHER AND NOT BOTH.'

So, if I understand it correctly I would have to pay 600PLN (and price difference between this ticket and new ticket).
The most restrictive ticket I've seen had no-show fee of 800PLN

The ticket booked via travel agency can be more restrictive?

My experience is that Expedia is a few hundred pounds cheaper (for UK-New Zealand in First, to put it in context) than emirates.com. However, Expedia refunds absolutely nothing if the ticket is cancelled; Emirates would refund all but a few hundred pounds.

The difference for me is even less as I can take out cheaper travel insurance since I do not need huge cover for cancellation.

For others travel agents might be a better bet.

Not sure where you read that bit about Expedia.
I frequently book through them, even though the disclaimer says nonrefundable etc, they ALWAYS follow the actual fare rules. And the best part they charge 0 fees. I use the US, UK, NZ, and SG Expedia's and their treatment is fairly standard across the board.

My only experience with Expedia and cancelling a flight was that they reimbursed me according to the ticket rules, but then took a processing fee of over 300 USD. Since it was a cheap Y ticket, that meant I only got back about half the price. This was however a few years ago.
