Upgrade waitlisting

I have noticed that a couple of recent posts have referred to the poster having been waitlisted for an upgrade. Is this really possible and if so what is the criteria and how is it achieved?

Currently I have an Expert Flyer alert set for my flight from DXB to AKL EK406 in February as this is the action which I have seen most frequently recommended. I have already been able to upgrade my flights between GLA and DXB from J to F but if there is another option which might help secure an upgrade on the longer segment then it would certainly be worth knowing about.

I know that there may be opportunities to upgrade at check in, the gate(?) or even on board but as I posted yesterday in Oztennis's thread I read somewhere on this forum, that it might be difficult/impossible, can't remember which, to upgrade the second leg of a multi leg flight at on line check in or at the first airport presumably because both would be more than 24 hours before the departure of the second flight.

Any thoughts or advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Alba

They don't do it anymore, certainly not for y to j.

I got wait listed because I complained about something they did so ek did me a favour. When tried it waitlist for another flight they said no and also asked me how I got wait listed! :D

It was a good benefit and in my view upgrade availability should be given on a preference basis ie io then plat then gold etc

I tried to waitlist myself for an upgrade recently from Y to J and knowing that it was difficult, using the argument that my spouse was already in J.

I tried a couple of times: each time the CSR was accommodating and said she tried but the system wouldn't let her and that "I should keep trying at a later date". Not sure if that was just a nice way to say no.

Ultimately, seats opened up at T-3, I got an alert from Expert Flyer and quickly booked the upgrade.

I got waitlisted for a J-F upgrade in November. The flight was in December. Upgrades never became available.

At check-in, they said they can't upgrade me on the second sector. I asked in the lounge and they said I might get an op-up. There must have been some no-shows, cause I never got that op-up. Didn't bother anymore on board.

At least you didn't have 9 hours of Y DUR-DXB even though there were 7 empty J seats on the plane that were not converted to D fares. Apparently "Skysurfers can't upgrade on-board, even if they meet all the criteria."
