I've always been op'd up at the boarding gate in DXB .
At LGW I was upgraded to F twice but was very late checking in (30 minutes or so !!!)And so went directly to the aircraft.

As another poster mentioned, upgrading at the boarding gate avoids
congestion in the premium lounges.
