I'd have to say the main benefit of Gold for me is the frequency of Op Up's. All my travel is ex UK, to mainly JNB/CPT and a variety of Far East destinations. The personal chat seems to be hit and miss, other times it can be so OTT that I am actually quite embarrassed when it does occur. What I do like (when it happens) is when staff get you that extra drink, ensure a preferred seat, and maybe get you to the front of the aircraft prior to de-planening.

That being said I am now becoming somewhat disillusioned with EK. The cutbacks in service (especially now in J) and the nonsense over Saver fares is really starting to get on my nerves. I will struggle to regain Gold this year even though my travel pattern is identical and I retained Gold by this time last year. The only real hope for me is the "roll over" rules as I did a lot of travel in Jan and Feb of this year.

Flew IAH-DXB today on EK214 (in Y as EK Gold).
Flight was empty. So no op-ups. Got a row of four seats to myself. The check-in staff already told me this is what they are going to do for me (as there was no chance of op-ups).

in-flight. ... the lead person in-charge of Y-service stopped and thanked me for flying EK.

One of the FA's handed me a pack of playing cards (as a gift). Thats about it.

They were all pretty nice ...

.but, I can see how it can be helpful, if they lead the Golds to the front of the plane before de-boarding. In a full flight, that can save a lot of time.

I didnt have any complaints though. I was happy to lay-flat in Y!

next flight to BOM coming up in a couple of hours.

Flew BKK-DXB then DXB-LGW-DXB.

BKK-DXB: booked into J, enjoyed the lounge (as always - shame one guy had a VERY LOUD phone call), sat in 1A. Escorted to seat, attentive service. No PJs but eh, I have plenty.

DXB-LGW: flying with wife so no lounge access for us (and couldn't even get into the Marhaba lounge together now they've stopped guests on normal Amex and stopped taking Mastercards from non-MENA banks). "Welcome back" greeting on the door, awful seats on the 777 (not that there is any other type in Y on that plane), no visit from the purser during the flight. Well-wrapped bottle in checked luggage somehow smashed when bag was put onto the belt to collect - bag was either dropped or kicked/stamped on.

LGW-DXB: again no lounge access for us despite the lounge being almost completely empty, stupid rule. Fine in Dubai where the lounge is overcrowded, but... grabbed a shower anyway before leaving to be with wife. Announcement of early boarding for Golds and Silvers but no enforcement so was a scrum anyway. No special greeting at the door, no visit during the flight. At least in an exit row - the tradeoff of the incredibly narrow seats is just worth it. Three bags between the two of us checked and only two got priority tags - so two came out immediately but we had to wait ten minutes more for the last one. What's the point?

So, requalified for Gold, but no intention of ever paying for EK again while travelling with my wife. Looks like, despite my unhappiness with BA over the open doors fiasco, they might pick up a few thousand extra dollars from me after all.

Actually there are still 777s with the old (non-Weber) seats in Y. These seats are truly horrid. The seat cushion tilts up at the front and it is impossible to get your feet on the ground unless you are 6'0 tall.

A good idea, but likely difficult to enforce as pax get up and crowd the aisles even before the plane is at the gate.

I don't think the fact that some seats are awful, and that some seats are really awful, invalidates my point

Haha, so true. Maybe I'll experience one of these awful seats one day
