Might I suggest not getting all worked up. You have a few options.

The first was to actually read the rules of the STPC hotel offer before booking your flights. The EK website does mention which fare buckets are eligible for the hotel stay, and you could have asked them which bucket the fare you were purchasing was in.

The easiest option is probably to book a hotel for yourself. There are some reasonably cheap ones available near DXB, and it will also give you an opportunity to see Dubai.

The other option is to pay the fare difference to a fare where you are entitled to the hotel accommodation, but I suspect this difference will be more than the cost of the hotel.

Also, be aware that Emirates only provides a hotel room if the shortest possible connection is over 8 hours. I don't know where you're flying to onward from YYZ, but it is extremely unlikely that you have to wait 22 hours for the first available connection.

So the onus of booking a long connection to save money is entirely on you, not on the airline.

All said and done, the A380 is a great aircraft to fly, and your 12 hour flight will seem much shorter.

Just an FYI, the STPC rules are DIFFERENT depending on which country you purchase the ticket in. You can see the country specific rules on the EK website for each country.

Interesting, because on the Canadian website there is no restriction based on fare bucket. So the OP would be entitled to STPC on the cheapest tickets. However I suspect this OPW booked long connections despite the availability of shorter ones.

Can you provide more details on where you're flying to from DXB? If it is indeed the first available connection to your destination that is 22 hrs after your arrival from YYZ, only then would you be entitled to the hotel. Was there a shorter connection you could have booked?

Also, like mentioned in my other post, the Canada website has nothing about fare classes. If you go to the EK canada website, under plan and book, essential information, long stopovers - the details are listed. Tell them that there is no mention of fare buckets on their website.

Ok, so the fare restriction does apply on tickets out of Japan. But I'm not sure what happens since you're originating out of YYZ.

I would suggest sending an email to [email protected]. Highlight your issue; they are quick to respond. However, if they are still going to charge $500 for the fare difference, you're better off booking your own hotel anyway.

As per Emirates the fare restrictions are on my DXB - COK sector and DEL - DXB sector. They are not only asking $500 for upgrade also asking $400 for ticket re-issue. You are correct, it is better to find my own hotel.

My travel starts from YYZ and we are taking a holiday in Dubai before my trip to Japan. This was the orginal plan and with this development, we are thinking of other airlines and other destinations for our Holiday.

I don't know the rules for Canada, but I do know that I was on a flight from JFK through DXB to JNB and the incoming plane (for the JFK to DXB flight) was late. It was due to depart at 10:40 am. We continually received updates but all we heard was "it is late".

After 3 hours of "it is late' Emirates bussed us all to a HoJo in Queens and provided food vouchers at the HoJos and each family was assigned a room. Apparently they (Emirates) had advance notice that the flight was going to be more than 8 hours late.

Well, about 6 pm we received a wake-up call in the room telling us the flight was now scheduled to depart at 8pm and to be ready to catch the shuttle bus back to the airport. We did, and all was fine, until we landed in DXB. We had missed the Johannesburg connection and thus, Emirates put us up in another hotel and gave us meal and transportation. We were there for only about 9 hours total but it was a welcome respite, enough time for a shower, snooze, and a meal.

So, my take on this is that if Emirates is to blame inasmuch as there is a deviation from the scheduled booking, then they will come through. If, however, the terms of the booking is a problem (to you, not them) then the problem is yours.

You have the option of taking EK513 from DEL which lands at 0630 and hence only a 3.5 hrs instead of 10.

Interestingly the Canadian site doesn't state restriction but the UAE and India ones do and these are the sectors you have an issue with DXB-COK and DEL-DXB. I think the agent is misinterpreting the rules and reading country specific restrictions instead of the Canadian rules ie where the ticket was issued.

Is the whole trip under a single PNR and ticket no.?

if you do end up booking your own hotel, have a look at both the Holiday Inn Express and also the Premier inn near the airport. Both are good properties (although the Premier Inn is better) and have have a free shuttle from the airport. Keep in mind that your 10 hour transit on your return will only give you +/- 6 hours of hotel room time when you take into account the time needed to clear immigration, collect luggage, transit to hotel, check-in, check-out transit to airport queue for checkin, queue for security etc.
