What is the ethernet port for?

Hello

I have a few flights coming up back home soon, on the way to Dubai I noticed an ethernet port by the tv screen, what is it for? Is that internet?

Are you sure it was ethernet and not USB?

Hi, I am new to FT, so please don't blame me. :)

This is either supported in the A340-500 or A380. Only these offer Wireless Internet (charge of course). And if you prefer Ethernet then Wireless - go ahead with the Ethernet plugs.

Regards,
Alex

What's the USB port for? Can you watch your own movie from a memory device???

Emirates states on their website that movies are possible but I didn't get it working.

You can listen to your own music and view pictures though.

Regards,
Alex

I would be curious about this as well. I noticed that it wouldn't support my iPhone 3G's movies, but I was happy enough that the USB port kept the iPhone charged while watching. This time around I'm taking a netbook with me and use that instead.

Quick question - I've used Euro plugs on the A380 before fine, but had problems with the AU/NZ plug not picking up any power. Has anyone tried the UK plug? (Netbook has UK plug, figuring out if I should take a universal adapter on board or not). Is it the same for the B777?

Never flied with the A380, however on 777's the socket is only 110V and can accept US/EURO/AU plugs, not the UK. Hence your device shall be universal power i.e. 110-240V 50-60Hz and shall have US/EURO/AU plug.

By the way, just today noticed the site and joined immeiately.

Thanks, will bring my adapter. One thing I love about electronics outside of North America is they always accept 110-240, always have to laugh at friends from US who need to buy an expensive converter on top, seems like a lot of US-targeted electronics ship with just 110v suport.

And welcome to FT!

Or they don't know any better. I always thought I needed a converter, but it turns out every US electronic I travel with is just fine with 220V as well. Who knew!

Don't try it with a Wii, unless you know for sure it takes 220V. I learnt that the $45 way :O

Nintendo has a horrible habit of including single-voltage, single-frequency adapters wherever possible :(

I had to buy new power units for both my Wii and my DS.

The ethernet on the seats is for enginering only, to update / reprogram..... There is no internet, wifi or otherwise supported on any EK aircraft..... On the A380 you will pick up a wifi signal.... But this is for the controllers of the seats in First and Business..... Wifi will be coming to the A380 in 2012!
