bucket fares, classes and seat counters

Hi
when reading some of the threads on the site, their seems to be more to booking a seat on the flight than just going onto Emirates web site and clicking confirm.

I have been reading about bucket codes where they have seats at a set price under a certain letter which i find it hard to get my head around (Please explain)
then their are different codes for classes Which i think i understand (why not have E, B, F, Or have i got it wrong.

Also their are sites that will tell you how many seats have been taken up on a flight, Not sure if it will show you the reserved seats because i believe the sites are pay to use Sites.

If anyone can explain for me any of the above, It might make my booking a far better experience and might save me money.

With EK, it's not possible to know the fare bucket before booking. These exist for internal revenue management, and it doesn't really matter for you what class you are booked in. What matters is flex/ saver, from a mileage point of view, or fare conditions, from a fare point of view.

Fare buckets matter when you are trying to make a redemption (eg you need D availability for a Business award) and this can be checked from expertflyer. Also, if you have a long stop over and need to ensure they provide a hotel, you need to be booked in certain (expensive) classes.

The generic classes are Y (economy), J (or C in some cases) (business), and F (First), though suites are P and there is no F bucket on those flights. If you do some research on these forums, you should find more details.

Thank you for your reply ung1

The last time i booked a upgrade with my Miles, it was easy, looks like they have made it harder to upgrade.

Unless you make the booking by phone. This can be handy regarding the long stopovers you mention.

The agency that we work with knows the fare buckets and books the ones we ask for, so I'd venture to say that travel agents probably have access to this information. Don't quote me on that one though...
