First ever connection and alone flight!
 

Hey Guys,

I'm heading off to Asia in a few weeks time, I'll be taking a connection flight from the United Kingdom via Emirates Airlines. I've been on a connection flight with my parents once and a direct once.

What are the procedures? I hear that the Pakistani Airport officials are very ignorant towards British people?

Please throw in all tips!

Firstly, welcome to Flyertalk!

Connecting via DXB when both your flights are on Emirates is likely to be pretty hassle free. Chances are, your boarding pass for the DXB-Pakistan flight will have been issued to you in the UK itself, but if not, you might have to collect that at the transfers desk in DXB.

Your baggage (if any) should be checked through and will be collected at your desination.

Can't comment on ignorance of Paksitani Airport Officials towards British people as such, but I sincerely doubt any such specific ignorance exists.

Yes, it will be to Dubai then connecting to Pakistan. I only fear a few things, for example, will it be okay to take my laptop with me on board the plane? If that's okay then, what about customs? The Pakistani ones? I'm afraid it might get confiscated or something, it's pretty brand new I only logged in to book my ticket!

I'll be taking only one laptop for my self, £400-500 in cash just so I can use it in the Airport in Dubai and on the way back to the UK after I've finished visiting there.

Also, are we allowed to take Medication? I have an inhaler, and some moisturising cream which I need for my skin.

Is there anything else to expect, any other tips? Oh, I think I'm going to have about four hour stay in Dubai, waiting for the connection, both ways.

You will need alot more cash if you are going to be in the Dubai airport for four hours.

Make sure you have the prescription with you so that you can show the officials if needed. Also, make sure that the prescription labels are still on the medication.

Seriously? I was hoping to grab some food, drinks and some snacks and enjoy the free WiFi they offer using my laptop until the next flight. I won't be booking in to a hotel or anything, will I really be needing more than £500? :eek:

You certainly can take your laptop with you on the plane. You shouldn't have any trouble with it when passing through Pakistani or any other Customs. One thing you will have to do, though, is remove it from your bag when passing through security and put it in a separate bin for going through the x-ray machine there.

Only additional info about your liquids and cream is to make sure that they are each less than 100 grams/3.5 ounces. And put them all together in a plastic, zip-lock baggie that, like the laptop, you'll probably have to remove from your carry-on bag when passing through security.

Don't worry about connecting at DXB as there's enough signage to guide you in the right direction. I once walked to the wrong end of the terminal, but it doesn't take long to get back to the center. The shops are same on either side, so you can stick to one side. Since you haven't flown often, you may want to familiarize yourself with the airport layout, but it's really pretty simple.

If you're carrying liquids in your hand baggage, it's good to have them in containers under 100 ml and in a zip lock bag, though no one cares about this in DXB in my experience. Also, I'm not sure your laptop will survive the journey if it's not in hand baggage. You can use it during the flight, though the inflight entertainment selection is pretty good.

No, but they have movies, tv shows, music, games, news updates etc. Take a look at the EK website to see what's playing etc.

Pakistan is very similar to Bangladesh and the only trouble you may get with officials in Pakistan is if you have any sort of electronic equipment in your MAIN luggage and NOT your hand luggage. They normally put your main luggage through an xray machine and if they find mobiles, laptops, etc, they ask for some 'tax' money. In my experience, i keep anything electrical such as mobiles and laptops on me and in my hand luggage and therefore they do not get scanned once you arrive.

As regards to DXB, you should be find for 4 hours, that will give you plenty of time to explore, grab a bite to eat and still make it back to the gate of your next departure with plenty of time. Its very difficult to get lost at Dubai airport.

Hi eshaq786, thank you so much for your reply. I don't speak any Pakistani language (Urdu, Punjabi etc) I'm sure English is fine? Adding on to the tax thing, is it compulsry to pay?

Also, where can I find the free WiFi?
