747-400: Ecomomy Amenities?
 

Hello all...

I'll be flying LY later this month JFK-TLV-JFK in Y (gulp). This is my first LY flight and one of my first 744 flights in a looooooong time.

I've tried doing some searches in this forum and haven't been able to get any information on what kinds of amenities to expect.

1. Will this route have power in Y for a laptop?
2. What's the AVOD situation in Y?
3. Will an amenity kit be provided?

In a related note, can LY GAs input AA frequent flyer information?

No laptop power nor AVOD in coach on the 747s. The back-seat screens show circular movies and programs that can be found here

They can, but for some reason it's a bloody nightmare getting the credit to actually post reliably. Keep *all* your boarding cards, ticket stubs, itineraries etc until the miles appear and if they don't, fax in copies to AA. It might take months but they should appear eventually even if you have to hassle them to do it.

As part of our upgrading process (which began last summer with the arrival of our two 777 airplanes), we will soon commence upgrading our 744 fleet. At the end of the process, all of the 744's interior design will be identical to the new 777. The upgrade will also include replacing all seats in the prestige classes to the new bed-seats.
As for your questions:
- As part of upgrading our economy class - connections to laptops will be installed in all seats making them available for use to all passengers. At the moment, connections to laptops are available only in the prestige classes. However, you can ask the steward to show you where you can log on with your computer.
- we will also upgrade all of the entertainment systems to digital ones. We are currently running a pilot on a new entertainment system which is called VIDIBOX.

- Comfort kits are available to all passengers traveling in the prestige classes.

Well, this is welcome news! I am very glad to hear that LY is doing somewhat of an upgrade to the Y class on the 744's. Now that there will be power outlets system-wide (at least on the long-haul fleet) its too bad that Connexion by Boeing (I think LY called it FlyWeb) is down.

The 744 upgrading process is expected to begin at the last quarter of 2008 and end during the first quarter of 2009.

.. so do your First Class travel on a 744 before the last quarter of 2008 if you still want it to feel like First Class ...

Power and AVOD...
 

If you take the main exit seat (where people comes/goes from the plane regulary) then you will have 2 power outlets near the door, you can use them.

As for AVOD, there is a new servcie which works also in economy where they
bring you a personal player with a bunch of movies, its nice to pass the time
and hold much more than the usual one provided on the seats.

Is there any re-thinking or assessment being done about the First Class seats? I know that many people are not happy with them and feel its a serious downgrade. I have seen Sat night flights TLV-NYC and Thurs night NYC-TLV with half of the F cabin empty!!

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep/go back to the current/old F and increase the number of new business class seats?

Responsiveness to the customer? Oi vey! What would the world come to then?

So all seats in Economy Class will be replaced as well in the B744's. The old IFE system will reamin if I understand you correct there will be the option for passengers to rent one of those Digi Players on all flights?

The seats in the Economy classes will indeed be replaced and redesigned, and each one will be equipped with an electric socket for a personal laptop. A list of EL AL flights that provide the VIDIBOX can be found at EL AL's website and is updated frequently. If your flight does not appear on the list, please inquire with customer support. Thanks for the info. Yeah it was about time as the seats were in a bad condition. There is a 5th B744 joining later this year, ex SQ plane or something? I'd assume for the time being the replacement of the B744's is off the table then for the near future. It would've been a good deal as the planes are still in a young condition to join the LY Cargo fleet as B742 replacement. A while it looked like LY would replace them with B773 / B77W's. Also do you think there will be a chance for LY to purchase the A380 as B744 replacement at some point?

cool! so, the 744s will have new Y seats! what about the "old" 777s?

well they really had to replace those seats they were falling apart. Shame LY doesn't replace the IFE on the B744's but I gues it is much cheaper to offer those Didital Players, which works fine for F and C but in Y this can cause a balagan as i think it costs money and then imagine 200 or so passengers wanting one :D
