ELAL Website Rant drawing to a close!

Well it seems the revolution is upon us. First we got a brief look last week of ELAL's new logo and today we seem to have a glimpse of what’s more to come.

Here is a new MiniSite for ELAL's King David Lounge. (Hebrew)

Enjoy

it looks nice but its still a piece of junk.

what part of CSS + HTML don't these idiots understand? They don't need moving pictures or mouseover animations, they need a website where you can book tickets, check and change reservations and check your matmid account.

LiorM Jan 26, 2006 11:13 am

they will do it soon

They are imporoving all the time.
I am suer they will change the website very soon

It's pretty nice, I like flash animations haha...

But yep, their site is really bad.

I'm in Microsoft Studies this days, to become a Microsoft Certified Professional, and one of my professors there told me that he knows about El Al's new site, and he said It's going to be aweful also.... not sure if he's trusty but.... he's well known in the web community, so I would trust that.

Do you know them? if so are they aware that this is no improvement? One day El Al is going to realize that people don't like wasting hours of their time doing to El Al in Tel Aviv to make simple changes to their tickets with incompetent agents... if they could just add SIMPLE functionality to their website, not a bunch of flash crap, it would be more valuable.

This is a bit of a generalization, but for whatever reason, the Israeli market seems to have a greater taste for a lot of graphics-intensive, Flash-based websites.

entropy Jan 26, 2006 3:53 pm

I'm not sure if the market has a taste for it, or the companies just like to make them.

They could take a hint from Continental as to making a SIMPLE, FUNCTIONAL website.

Absolutely correct! The companies creating the websites are so impressed with their talent to make things blink and move that they haven't a clue as to what functionality and usability are. AA has one of the best airline websites, TG's is also excellent, neither use bells and whistles but provide great functionality including TGs i-checkin service!

LY is spending too much time listening to advertising and creative agencies and not enough time looking at the big boys and their websites.

Meah Chuz!! (100%)

apirchik Jan 29, 2006 1:38 am

A couple of flash presentations don't necessarily mean a new website in a sight.

I actually heard from two different sources that they were working on a website and have declared 2006 to be the year of the Internet for the company. I assume that means lots of flash presentations.

We must have all been really confused until now. It turns out they actually live in Israstan, not Israel, right? That would explain their lack of internet savvy.

Well I've maintained for years that Israelis are great at developing technology but we are terrible at using it (for non-military purposes).

Well, I'm in no position to argue yosithezet, but I can think of a lot of anecdotal things anyway that have been developed in Israel that have been nicely developed/used. Don't sell yourselves too short. :)

I've myself used or seen the fruits of many innovations like electronic phone recording in call centers, electronic taxi dispatching, internet firewalls, etc. That gastric camera capsule was developed in Israel right? The Centrino chip? (other Intel innovations?)

Anyway, I'm sure you can point to lots of other developments that haven't been exploited as well. I just think there's still a lot to be proud of.

The Intel Dothan(Pentium-M) and the new Yonah processors were also developed in Israel. The thing is that the Intel brand is so well established here so the AMD brand is almost non-existing. AMD have just announced opening an office here realizing there is a huge market and they are totally missing it.

The same goes with Microsoft against Linux and/or Mac. I believe more than 95% of the machines connected to the internet in Israel use Microsoft Internet Explorer so developing websites that support other browsers becomes an unnecessary investment and many websites in Israel simply do not support anything but IE.

E-Commerce in Israel is at a beginning stage but is picking up fast. Website usability and overall look improves accordingly.

A little OT at this point, but just something to mention -- the Intel chip fabrication plant in Kiryat Gat is one of the best, most efficient 'fabs' in the Intel system, and is therefore a model for the rest of the world. That may sound an excessively boring thing to note, but it's interesting because it relates to the quality of work done there versus similar plants around the world, and it translates to better financial success because it means that more, saleable, expensive wafers are produced there. (No, I don't know any more than the average 'geek' layman about chips, so I can't say much more; I just happened to get an excellent tour there once and asked a lot of questions. :D I never miss a chance to visit Kiryat Gat.)

entropy Jan 31, 2006 10:52 am

that's probably part of the reason they are building another huge fab (the other being the large subsidy given by the gov't).

Back on topic, Israel used to be known for its "get it done, efficiently, and with as little resources as possible". LY's website probably costs 10x what it should and doesn't work.

Really nice .... more things to show what's to come ....
http://www.mccanndigital.co.il/elal/...M_Mini_02.html

Though the company working on the new site is not McCann Digital, its Euro Tel Aviv.
McCann Digital is part of EL Al's Advertising firm, McCAnn Erickson. McCann built the current site, they lost to Euro in the tender to build the new "million dollar site."

LY787, you seem to be pretty much in the know! Have you had an opportunity to see screenshots of the new site? Or any development sketches?

Cheers
