And on the Hebrew Elal site:
https://www.elal.com/he/about-ELAL/A...e-Flights.aspx
you can find info on 5 more flights on March 24-25-26 to Mumbai (India), Delhi (India), Perth (Australia), San Paulo (Brazil). San Jose (Costa Rica) including prices.

There is no other airline in the world going around picking up stranded passengers! Respect!
Actually quite a few airlines fly out pretty much empty from their home base to repatriate stranded citizens of their respective countries, they just don't make a whole PR fuss about it.
LY is charging a pretty penny for those flights...

$1500 is a pretty penny? So I checked via Expedia Athens-Perth for June 7-21 (normalcy) and cheapest I found was $3700.
Tried Frankfurt to Perth same dates in June - $3800
Tried from Istanbul to Perth - $3500

Tried Istanbul to Costa Rica - $2900 in June

So I am wondering why you would state that Elal is charging a "pretty penny" for flights that appear to be cheaper than anything available this coming summer.

I'm not entirely sure why would you look at prices from other destinations or whether expedia is just giving odd prices, google flights for TLV-PER shows prices of <1000$ for May, and ~1500$ for later on (for a R/T)
TLV-SJO ~800$ wide open through summer months.
TLV-GRU goes for as low as 500$.

Did flight to PER fly over Somalia and Somaliland? Do El Al normally fly there en route to South Africa?

Looking at the routes, its seems the most direct route avoiding their middle eastern countries that don't allow El Al overflights.

A bit of zoom on the routing from FR24

Followed by some zig-zagging across the Indian Ocean and parts out of range and then on into PER
