OT: Changes to Arkia operations and layoffs

Here's a Hebrew article outlining upcoming changes to Arkia's operations as a result of the Sde Dov closure:
https://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-5541832,00.html

Summary: About 250 layoffs, sale of 5 Embraer jets, cancellation of A330 purchase, and a new focus on flights to Europe.

Schedule disruptions may occur starting today as the union has decided to take action.

The plan to close Sde Dov has been public for years. It seems crazy to me that they'd only make the decision now to sell aircraft etc. Why would they cancel the A330? If they are going to start flying abroad more, they'll need it. Wondering why none of the Israeli carriers are managed properly.

My thoughts exactly. This sounds like terrible management and excuses - Sde Dov certainly can't be blamed for dropping the A330!

SDV employees - move to TLV
Air crew - train on other aircraft since Arkia will expand activity to Europe

It's not rocket science.

They do not need as many employees in TLV to serve extra 4-5 daily flights. So 80% of the ground staff will not be needed.
Aircrew is a minority of those being laid off. And since Arkia cancelled plans for other a/c there is no need to retrain them. I guess some will stay and will be retrained from EMBs to A320s.

Now Arkia with reduced TLV-ETM operations ( as opposed to SDV-ETH and TLV-ETH days) is not really much of an airline anymore. So either they restructure and begin to compete with LY for real, or they remain a very low-end charters and TLV-ETM operation and need to downsize their staff accordingly.
